AAA Carolinas: More on road this holiday in NC, SC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The AAA Carolinas motor club says more people will be on the road in North Carolina and South Carolina this Memorial Day weekend compared with last year.

The club estimates that 775,000 North Carolina and 380,000 South Carolina motorists will be traveling, a 3 percent increase over last year.

The Charlotte-based club attributes the increase to a 13 cent drop in gasoline prices since May 7, forecasts for good weather and a decline in unemployment.

The club says hotel bookings are up 9 percent over last Memorial Day and Carolinians have reserved about 20 percent more rental cars this holiday compared to last year.

Air travel is expected to hold steady with 60,000 North Carolinians and 32,000 South Carolinians flying this holiday weekend.
