ACLU investigating NC sheriff after comments

READ MORE:
SMITHFIELD -- A North Carolina civil rights group says it will investigate a sheriff's office for racial profiling after a sheriff said in published reports that "Mexicans are trashy." The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina said Tuesday its legal office was filing public records requests with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office for traffic checkpoint and arrest records. The action comes after Sheriff Steve Bizzell apologized for comments published Sunday in The News & Observer of Raleigh. Bizzell also said illegal immigrants in his county were "breeding like rabbits," but said he sympathized with immigrant laborers and acknowledged they enrich the lives of his constituents. He later said he didn't intend to make broad statements that reflected on legal and law-abiding Hispanics.

Miss liddy made it an issue and bizzell's comments were racist

when she used bizzell to taut an issue she was trying to sell us on (that was false)...but I will stand beside what My Lord Christ teaches me...I extend her love, but hold her to account as I do him. Romans 12 calls on turning away and standing firm against the ways of this world. Racisim and power without accounability are indemic to this world: The North Carolina State NAACP protests the openly racist and stereotypical statements made by Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell in a series of interviews he gave to the News & Observer. Sheriff Bizzell told the N & O, which covers Johnston County and other areas around the Triangle, that Latino immigrants in Johnston County: · Are "breeding like rabbits" · Are spreading a culture of drunkenness and violence · "Rape, rob and murder" American citizens · Fail to pay taxes and drain social services · Are trashy. After the N & O printed these statements, Sheriff Bizzell e-mailed a clarifying statement, indicating he did not mean to include all immigrants, only illegal immigrants in his statements. Several of our partners in our Historic Thousand on Jones Street Coalition have already taken action. El Pueblo's Director, Tony Asion, has asked for Sheriff Bizzell's badge. The N.C. ACLU has demanded all e-mails and other records to determine whether the open expression of racial animus displayed by the leading law enforcement officer in the County is not matched by a racially disparate law enforcement on the streets and in the "justice" system. There is precedent for our Partners' demands and we stand with them. The NAACP views Sheriff Bizzell's comments as merely symptomatic of a deeper problem. Declared Rev. Dr. William Barber II, President of the NC NAACP: "This language comes from an old play book. We see it from the prism of history when elected officials were allowed to say any and every thing publicly about African Americans without any repercussions. We've heard it before, when elected officials, such as Sheriffs and Governors in the South, castigated, scapegoated, and violently abused African American people. Officers of the law have too much power (the backing of the government, the license to use a gun, and the authority to arrest) for an officer, let alone a sheriff to engage in mean, hateful, stereotypical, racist, and vitriolic speech which destroys public trust, places in suspect the fairness of law enforcement and could have greater social consequences. Every leader elected, and running for office, from the Senate, the Governor, to the General Assembly should: 1. Denounce and demand discipline for these actions, 2. Refuse to scapegoat our Hispanic brothers and sisters for political means 3. Present a united front calling for humane and just immigration laws." Amina Turner, Executive Director of the NC NAACP, added: "Attitudes expressed by this sheriff in the N&O article serve as fodder for those weak-minded individuals who commit hate crimes of old in the New Millennium against Hispanics, blacks, interracial couples and other groups making North Carolinians of good will question the degree of progress that we tout and are proud of." The North Carolina State NAACP and our 85 partners in the Historic Thousands on Jones Street Coalition in 2007 endorsed the following public policy position: We demand the North Carolina General Assembly urge the federal government to enact comprehensive and humane immigration reform. We demand the stopping of local law enforcement from enforcing non-criminal, immigration violations and deny due process to persons because of their immigration status. We demand laws to improve housing and workplace standards for migrant workers. We demand undocumented workers be able to protect their rights in the workplace, such as minimum wage, workers' compensation, payment of wages which would protect the rights of all workers. And We Demand all N.C. children have access to higher education - regardless of their parents' immigration status. See N&O story http://www.newsobserver.com/news/immigration/story/1209646.html

The same bunch

These are the same bunch that stood behind the Duke stripper when it was apparent that she was lying. Oh yes, one was supposed to be a minister. What a scam. A supposed minister demanding justice for a liar. Get real. The naacp doesn't want equality, and has turned into a shakedown artist like, "reverand Jackson." Your exactly the reason this country is in decline. Unrestricted, undocumented, illegal criminals. The first act coming to this country is to violate our laws. "Miss Liddy". Catch phrase for democrats. More gimmee gimmee. You say "We demand the stopping of local law enforcement from enforcing non-criminal, immigration violations and deny due process to persons because of their immigration status." No one is denied due process. But we see what your policy really means. Everything the sheriff said is true. Undocumented workers are illegal criminals. They should be arrested and deported. Period. Get over yourself. The rest of the nation has.

Protest and Name Call: It is what it is

Protests and name call all you want, it is stil racist language from a sheriff from a community that until 1987 had a "Welcome to the Home of the KKK" bill board at its city limts and a sheriff who is supported, promoted and involved in partisan politics on behalf of the ever absent, elitist Ms. Liddy Dole.

another Liddy Dole Sheriff

Ain't that something..another one of Liddy's featured sherriff's showing his true colors. Racist and classist! No, that is NOT what Smithfield needs, not what North Carolina needs and not what our Lord teaches us EVER!

Good Lord

It's kinda funny how you say the Lord teaches us. "isn't that something..another one of Liddy's featured sheriff's showing his true colors". No where in the article does it say Libby Dole had anything to do with this sheriff. I suggest you learn how to spell her name correctly, rather than show your true bias against someone, and then claim the Lord has taught you anything. You need to read the Bible again, and stop showing your ignorance.

Racist Police officer

it funny how racism is never apparent to racist

They can literally be trashy

OH PLEASE. WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO TO THE SHERIFF? FOR CALLING PEOPLE TRASHY. SORRY, BUT MEXICANS CAN BE TRASHY. THEY LIVE A DIFFERENT WAY IN MEXICO. I LIVED IN AN APT. COMPLEX & THEY WOULD PUT THEIR TRASH OUTSIDE THE DOOR & LEAVE IT UNTIL IT STUNK, NEVER THINKING TO PUT IT IN THE DUMPSTER. MY BROTHER-IN-LAW RENTED A TRAILER TO SOME MEXICANS OUT IN THE COUNTRY AND THEY JUST DUMPED THEIR TRASH RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOOR ON THE GROUND. AFTER THEY LEFT HE HAD TO GO OUT & HAUL IT AWAY. I'M SURE THAT'S PRETTY MUCH WHAT THE SHERIFF MEANT. THERE'S A DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE COUNTRY & JOHNSTON COUNTY IS STILL RURAL. PLUS, THEY CALL THEMSELVES THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES BUT THEY'RE GOING AFTER AN AMERICAN WHO SERVES THE PUBLIC. PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY SURE LIKE TO BITE THE MAN THAT PROTECTS THEM!
