WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- One of the busiest travel days of the year has arrived. You can bet many travelers are coming and going by plane.
At Wilmington International Airport, things have been going smoothly, but can the same be said for airports across the country?
From New York, Connecticut and even Los Angeles travelers from all over arrived to visit their families, who were waiting for them at ILM. While travel conditions were as close to perfect at our airport, we wanted to know what these travelers experienced before they made it to North Carolina.
"the flight was great. Totally full," said Emily Heinz, who flew out of LAX. "The biggest problem was getting to the airport, 'cause we couldn't get into the airport because everyone was picking up people. There was a 25-minute wait just to get into the airport vicinity."
And what about the security checkpoint at LAX?
"Um, crowded," Heinz said. "Went through the body scanner for the first time. It wasn't that bad. I don't know why people make a big deal out of it."
The Zampino family arrived from New York's LaGuardia Airport. Even travelling with their little one Mark, they said getting through security was not a problem. They did not have to go through a body scanner, but said they were ready for it.
"We weren't worried," Steve Zampino said. "We figure it was worth being careful."
The travelers we spoke with had nothing but great things to say about their holiday travel despite all the talk lately. The Gravelles from Connecticut even called the media out.
"Yesterday on the news they made it seem like it's just going to be a traffic jam everywhere you went, and even the road to and from the airport was very easy," Susie Gravelle said.
No matter what kind of experience flyers had, there was one thing they felt the same about. They were all just happy to spend the holiday with family and friends.
As for flight delays, folks flying into ILM had nothing to worry about. Only a handful of flights from Atlanta and Charlotte came in late with delays up to 45 minutes.
