Alma Gravely in town to talk about upcoming commissioning

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A United States Navy guided missile destroyer will be commissioned in the Port City in November. The USS Gravely is a 509-foot ship named after Vice Admiral Samuel Gravely. His wife Alma, visited the Port City today, and will be honored at a community event on Saturday. The Gravely was christened in Mississippi in June.

Mrs. Gravely had the honor of breaking the champagne bottle across the bow. She says she is humbled and knows her late husband would be proud.

"I'm just so honored," said Alma Gravely. "I know that he'd be saying well I'll be darned they built a ship in my name that's what he would be saying."

When a ship is named for an individual, the navy will request the eldest living direct female descendant of that individual to take on the role of ship's sponsor.

Alma Gravely has been asked to sponsor the USS Gravely.

The Gravely commissioning is set for November 20th.
