Almond resigns from N.C. House one day after allegations surface

RALEIGH (AP) -- Two-term Republican State Representative David Almond has resigned from the Legislature due to an unspecified personnel complaint filed with House leadership.

In a one-sentence letter to House Speaker Joe Hackney, Almond immediately resigned his seat.

A written statement from Almond says he intends to defend himself against the charges, but says it's in the best interest of him, his family and his constituents to resign.

Hackney says he received "a personnel complaint" involving Almond last week, but says state and federal confidentiality laws bar him from giving any details. The speaker also says while Almond's resignation resolves the matter to the satisfaction of the complainant, he doesn't know if a criminal complaint had been filed.

Republicans in the district will name a replacement for Almond to serve out the remainder of his two-year term.
