Annexation discussion continues in Wilmington

READ MORE:
The on-going discussion about annexing Monkey Junction into Wilmington continued last night at a Town Hall meeting at Ashley High School. Dallas Woodhouse is from Americans for Prosperity, one of the sponsors of the meeting. His group tends to be against forced annexation. Woodhouse said annexation is a problem because people in the affected area don't have a vote, that the decision is made by the city council. Then there's the matter of more taxes. Woodhouse said,"Annexation is a problem in North Carolina because the citizens that are affected have no vote in the process. The city council members make the decision, but it's the people that are in the county who don't elect those people, they have no recourse." However City Council Member Laura Padgett said they end up serving an area that is beyond the city limits,"because as the center of trade and commerce for southeastern north carolina, everybody uses our roads." Padgett did say that some benefits of annexation are saving on fire insurance rates, city deductible taxes and having a say in who gets elected to city council.

Good Coverage & Bad Taxes

Your station has really covered this important local issue. You put it on the line for citizens to examine annexation as the force it can be in people's lives. It is also time citizens start examining taxing policies and wasteful spending.

FIRST

of all EVERYONES taxes go to pay for road projects across the state. With HER reasoning...the City of Wilmington OWES LOTS OF MONEY to New Hanover County for using county roads outside of the city. PAY UP!

In North Carolina, counties

In North Carolina, counties don't provide roads the way cities do. Roads are city or state maintained. The city bears the lion's share of joint expenses between the city and the county anyway. Besides that, the annexation laws are developed by the STATE lawmakers, for whom we are all eligible to vote.

More like annex-wait-ion

How long have we heard rumors about this. I believe this has been an ongoing rumor just the like the city making Market a two lane street near the cemetery. Treebeard I will rule all of Middle Earth...and the squirrels!!

annex

Why not just get it over with and annex the entire county. Then there would be no more moaning. It's gonna happen eventually.

Monkey Junction Annexation

Ms. Padgett, since the people use the city's roads, etc. they should be annexed. Does that mean that everyone in the county should be annexed because we all use the city's roads, etc? Maybe Wrightsville Beach, Ogden, Carolina Beach, even tourists use the city's roads should they be annexed too. What's the use of moving into the county if the city of Wilmington is going to annex areas that they believe uses their roads to create more tax revenue. Do your research on how much of the tax dollars your spending to annex another part of the county to create more. What happened to living life simply in this county. We don't need more stuff we need to create a community where all can grow and thrive to be the best. Spend the tax dollars on improvements on aging infrastructure, education, nutrition, medical care, air & water quality, etc. I know this all costs but how eliminating what's not a priority such as the convention center & focus on what's right for the environment & the people.

Padgett is an idiot

They also get to pay for sidewalks that won't be in place for another 5 years or so. Their tax money also goes to pay for an already stretched out City LE. However City Council Member Laura Padgett said they end up serving an area that is beyond the city limits,"because as the center of trade and commerce for southeastern north carolina, everybody uses our roads." What exactly is that suppose to mean??? Why doesn't the City annex the whole county since everyone inside the county also uses the roads that lead into downtown
