April is Donate Life Month

READ MORE: April is Donate Life Month
WILMINGTON -- It's Donate Life month, which means it's time thank organ donors across the country. Many in our area owe their lives to organ donors. Mary Bonser had a heart transplant. She said, "When they become donors or some family member's a donor. They're not forgotten." Bonser says she owes her life to someone she'll never know. She had her heart transplant about a year ago and will always be grateful for the donor's sacrifice. "It helped me," she said. "Kept me around for my family." Bonser is one of the lucky ones. There are nearly 3,000 waiting for an organ transplant in North Carolina and the waiting list nationwide adds up to more than 100,00. Greg Hershberger is the family support coordinator at Carolina Donor Services. He said, "Every day 17 of those people will die without a transplant, so the need is crucial." Hershberger says being an organ donor is a personal decision, but one he always endorses. He said, "If you are a person who spends your life giving to others, donation really is your chance at the end of life to do something that expresses that at its best." Bonser says she's healthy again, and trying to make the most of her second chance. She's written a letter to her donor's family and hasn't heard back. She's says words aren't enough to express her appreciation. Bonser said, "I mean, the only thing you can say is thank you for giving me another chance at life. Because that's what it was." You can register to be an organ donor at the department of motor vehicles or you can sign up online. Visit http://www.donatelifenc.org/ for more info.
