Five Years Later

It was supposed to be my first full night's sleep in a couple of weeks.

Ooh! Pictures of Suri!

The October issue of Vanity Fair features exclusive photos of Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and their four-month-old daughter Suri. And to this I raise the question: Who cares?
OK. Perhaps the better question would be why do people care? It’s a baby. Sure her parents are worth millions and make movies or TV shows you might enjoy, but so what? I mean, there are people out there who have probably waited with more eager anticipation to see photos of Suri than they have to see their own child.

One of the frustrating things about working in television is the ratings system. For those that don’t know, ratings represent the number of TV households in your market tuned to you at a given time. They are frustrating, because they are not always an accurate measure of a quality product. Some stations have maintained huge ratings simply because they are the oldest station in a market or were dominant years ago. The obvious downside is that stations with those big leads often get rather comfortable. As a result, their viewers may not get the coverage they deserve. I think that’s what happened here in Wilmington last night with Tropical Storm Ernesto.
