Bob Teixeira, a Charlotte guitar teacher, took a stand against US dependence on foreign oil last fall. He spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil. He buys soybean oil in 5-gallon jugs at Costco, which costs him about a third more than diesel.

Elective Bible classes in Pender County high schools face an uncertain future.
The school board there has voted to review the status of the classes because the teachers aren't licensed to teach high school and they're not paid by the school system.
