The national unemployment rate has hit a 14 year high at 6.5 percent. There are now 10 million unemployed people in the country.

Starting Friday, and through the weekend, home improvement stores are selling energy saving appliances tax-free. It's a part of the state's first ever Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday.

Just 5 out of 14 Bladen County schools met Adequate Yearly Progress requirements. Even so, some Bladen County parents we spoke with said they are not concerned, and they believe schools are doing all they can.

New Hanover County law enforcement officers remembered one of their own today. Tarica Pulliam was murdered this summer. The annual Local Heroes Golf Tournament was held in her honor.

The election may be over, but there is still plenty of work to be done. New Hanover County Board of Elections is currently working to make sure every vote counts.

There is a lot going on in the New Hanover County school system. The state released Adequate Yearly Progress results yesterday, and local school leaders say the low numbers do not reflect how much students are improving.

Friday at the Southport Community Center, the Ninth Annual Artisans Holiday Boutique kicked off, getting lots of people in the holiday shopping spirit.
