On October 31, 1765, angry Wilmingtonians held a mock funeral for Liberty the day before the Stamp Act was to go into effect. The Stamp Act placed taxes on most forms of paper in the colonies, including newspapers, letters, pamphlets and wills.

Officials have released the name of a North Carolina man killed as winds from superstorm Sandy whipped through the state.
Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said 25-year-old Jody Alan Davis of Mount Airy was driving a pickup Monday night about 7 p.m. when he struck a downed oak tree near Dobson.
