A crossing guard at an Iredell County middle school is dead after he was struck and killed by a car after classes had dismissed for the day.
The Charlotte Observer reports that 59-year-old Frank Booth died Wednesday. The N.C. Highway Patrol said Booth was hit just after 3 p.m. in front of Mount Mourne Middle School. Booth was flown to an area hospital, where he died.

Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have endorsed a policy which will allow students to live in dorm suites and apartments with roommates of the opposite gender beginning next school year.
The board of trustees unanimously endorsed Thursday "gender-neutral" housing. Supporters of the gender non-specific housing option say the move would help students - specifically gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students - who are being harassed and bullied in traditional on-campus housing.

Gov. Beverly Perdue says she's committed to ensure mentally ill people in group homes aren't put out on North Carolina streets come January but is hard pressed because she lacks authority to move state money around.
Perdue told reporters Thursday in Raleigh she believes legislative leaders want to fix the problem but doesn't know yet how it'll be done.

Another Republican says he's running for the No. 2 leadership position in the North Carolina House for the next two years.
Bert Jones of Reidsville announced Thursday he would seek the position of speaker pro tempore. Outgoing Majority Leader Paul Stam of Apex and finance committee leader Julia Howard of Mocksville already have entered the race.
