Police say a young man opened fire in a crowded mall of holiday shoppers in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. The gunman killed two people before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

State prosecutors are arguing that the murder conviction of Durham novelist Michael Peterson should be reinstated.
WRAL-TV reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/UueEca) the state Attorney General's Office has appealed a judge's decision last year that granted Peterson a new trial in the December 2001 death of his wife, Kathleen.
