In Wednesday night's sports segment we featured an extra innings baseball thriller between NC State and East Carolina in Raleigh. We also traveled to Hampstead to check in on Topsail baseball and softball teams. Both squads are state ranked. On top of that, we got a peek at the nationally ranked UNCW women's tennis team against Coastal Carolina.

It was a February night that ended in tragedy with three people dying after their SUV slammed into a tree. Speed was believed to be a major factor. Now, police say drugs may have also played a role in the crash.

A jury of eight women and four men found Thomas Grooms guilty of two counts of second degree murder, two counts of felony death by motor vehicle, one count of reckless driving and one count of open container in the accident that killed Trey and David Doolittle last April. The judge sentenced Grooms to 24-30 years in jail for his crimes.

An Ashley High School teachers assistant is out of jail after being charged with indecent liberties with a 17-year-old girl. He's the second TA at a New Hanover County High School charged with a crime against a student this month.
