UNCW holds off ECU Pirates in men's basketball; Atkins scores 40 for Seahawk women

UNCW handcuffed rival East Carolina on 28 percent shooting and set a season high with 11 blocks to shackle the Pirates 66-54 in a holiday men’s basketball clash on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum. The UNCW women basketball team also won on Saturday. It's hard to lose when Kelva Atkins tallies 40 points. The Seahawks won their second straight game to improve to 5-3 on the season and won for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings against their rivals at Trask Coliseum. The Pirates dipped under .500 with the loss and stand 5-6 on the campaign.

Two NYPD cops 'assassinated' in Brooklyn ambush

Two New York City police officers were "assassinated," shot "execution-style" as they sat in their patrol vehicle in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, city officials said.

'I Can't Breathe, Hands up Don't Shoot' rally held Saturday

The New Hanover County Chapter of the NC Black Leadership Caucus sponsored a rally on Saturday at St. Stephens AME Church in downtown Wilmington. This peaceful protest was against the police-involved violence across the nation in hope for change.

Barber shop gets free renovations, now paying it forward

Bigg Redd's Barber Shop on the corner of 4th and Brunswick streets in downtown Wilmington recently received free renovations from Coastal Construction Company, now they are paying it forward by giving children under 12 free hair cuts Saturday.

videoFriday's Full Court Press on WWAY featured a basketball doubleheader at Brogden Hall between New Hanover and Ashley. It turned out to be a Wildcat type of night with New Hanover winning both the boys and the girls game. We unveiled the "Full Court Press Watch List" for the first time this season. Insurance commissioner rejects industry request to raise homeowner's rates

video Homeowners in southeastern North Carolina should expect lower insurance rates starting next summer. It comes after North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin rejected the insurance industry's request to raise homeowner's insurance rates by an average of about 25 percent.
