Ashley High senior battles beach pollution

READ MORE:
An Ashley High School senior is doing her part to fight beach pollution. Seventeen-year-old Megan Butterfield organized a group of her friends to clean up Carolina Beach. The teenagers put on their rubber gloves and spent their Saturday morning digging for trash and cigarette butts in the sand. The effort was part of Butterfield's senior project that examined beach pollution and it's affect on the environment. Butterfield says she's learned that everyone can help make a difference. "When they come to the beach and they bring drinks and food, just bring along a trash bag so you can put it in there when you're done," Butterfield said. "Don't put out your cigarettes in the sand and leave them there," she added. "At least pick them up, take them with you and throw them in a trash can nearby." Butterfield's senior project also requires her to write a ten page paper and make a speech on the subject of beach pollution.

senior project

Megan I think you did a great job on your project I hope you had some kind of impact on someone. Thanks for caring about our beaches. **

Thanks, in all seriousness

I did not in anyway mean to bash this girls senior project or anyone elses, and if i did i am truly sorry. I hope that all students can make the best out of the horrid assignment and give to the public. Megan you did a great job and I will apologize to you for two reasons. One i did not mean to bash you, and i hope i did not, and two, i am sorry for you having to put up with NHCS Senior Project

good transition to college life

First of all...a senior in high school needs to be doing what needs to be done to prepare for what life is like at college. That includes learning how to do a project like this. Frankly, if a senior project is getting in the way of work and extracurricular activities, then those activities should be back-burnered. School is for learning, and far too many students go to college unprepared for what professors expect. If a student can't handle the time demands of a senior project in conjunction with their other classes and a part time job, then they probably aren't ready to go to college anyway....because it only gets worse at the college level. Lets face it, within 9 months the majority of these students will be away at college doing this type of work, why not prepare them for it now instead of when it is too late.

Very untrue

I am not quite sure when or where you went to college, but as a current college student at a university that is regarded as one of the best in the country; one that has an average SAT over 1300 and an average high school GPA of 4.4 i can say that senior project in now way prepares one for college. no college has deadlines to walk a student all the way through an assignment and gives 0 if 1 second late. yes one second, according to the school clock. and no student has to make a physical product of this sort in their english class.

Senior Project

Senior project needs to be removed from the state curriculum. More needs to be emphasized on math, english, and the sciences. and your senior year the emphasis needs to be placed on the SAT and applying to college, not some senior project that takes up a students time from work, extracurricular activities, and applying to college.

2234

SAT's are done in the 11th grade if you have your ducks in a row. MOST people have already applied to colleges by senior year if they are serious.

Wrong you are

Most college applications are not even available until August (about two weeks before senior year starts)...to UNC schools anyways, and those who are truly serious about getting into college apply to early admission (DUE IN NOVEMBER) and this leaves AMPLE TIME to take the OCTOBER SAT...something MOST SENIORS do so that they can get the HIGHEST SAT score possible. Those who are not serious, take the SAT once...those who are serious take it AT LEAST THREE TIMES, twice their junior year and once their senior year...and yes many take it more than three times, including once their sophomore year (which means that they will not have learned all the math covered on the test.)

Senior Project are good for students

Exactly what extracurricular activites are you talking about....drinking, drugs, movies, hanging out? And as far as work goes, most students work around 20 hours a week at most. Sure there are some exceptions, but the senior project does little as far as taking up a students time on studying and working. If what you are saying is the case, then maybe seniors shouldn't be allowed to play sports. We all know how much time that takes up. As far as more emphasis on the core classes, I agree but most students have completed their requirements and won't take those extra classes. As far as the SAT's there isn't much studying done for it. Sure there is the PSAT, but most students don't take advantage of it. Senior projects are very good for students. It requires them to do some research, brainstorming, and writing. It's something that they will need and need to work on while in college.

Senior Project

These required project's are not for academic purposes, they are to provide a politically correct feel good attitude. The people that push this crap don't care about EDUCATION.

Hey slopoke

The politically correct feel good attitude you speak of is way off the mark. Senior projects have been around since seniors have and long before the word "politically correct". My sons senior project was a ball buster and he aced it. Made me feel good that he could do it properly, so I guess the "feel good" part of your theory is true. If you consider the chemical makeup of household items PC then you win. His project was on chemical engineering....... his choice. Senior projects separate the "men from the boys". If your going to college you will have NO problem doing one, if your not then one last mind numbing paper won't hurt.

What are you talking about

Similar projects like this are done at the collegiate level. Students need to be prepared for college life and this is just one step in preparing these students. And exactly what does provideing a politically correct feel good attitude have to do with a senior project???

i agree 100%...it takes too

i agree 100%...it takes too much time and takes away from the fundamentals of education that so many students are lacking. I know some teachers that agree as well. I dont disagree with the concept as most students in today's world can't properly write but what about a junior project?
