Authorities find 'center of interest' for Marine's body

JACKSONVILLE (AP) -- Authorities identified a "center of interest" late Friday in their search for a shallow grave in Onslow County holding the body of a pregnant Marine. They are focusing on what they called an underground cavity in the backyard of a comrade she had accused of rape. Sheriff Ed Brown says authorities don't plan to look anywhere else. He says information from another woman, a former Marine, left investigators certain that 20-year-old Lance Corporal Maria Frances Lauterbach was dead, even though they hadn't yet found her remains. Authorities suspended their search of the backyard of key suspect - Marine Corporal Cesar Armando Laurean - for the day shortly after 5 p.m. Friday. But investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation planned to move indoors Friday night and begin a search for blood and other evidence inside his one-story, brown brick ranch home not far from Camp Lejeune. Meanwhile, the search continued for the 21-year-odl Laurean. Brown says Laurean had declined to meet with investigators and apparently left the area without telling his lawyers where he was going.
