Autopsy report says alcohol contributed to beach fire deaths

READ MORE:
RALEIGH (AP) -- An autopsy report says that alcohol intoxication contributed to the death of a South Carolina student who died in an October beach house fire that killed six others. Released late last month, the report on Cassidy Fae Pendley says the 18-year-old died primarily from inhaling carbon monoxide from the blaze. But Dr. Thomas B. Clark III also wrote that alcohol intoxication was a significant contributing condition. Pendley's autopsy report is the first to say alcohol contributed to a death in the fire. Pendley's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for driving a car. State medical examiner Dr. John Butts has said six of the seven had high alcohol levels. One of the students who was killed had no alcohol in their system. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

teens die in house fire

No wonder they did not get out. They were passed out and did not hear the alarms. Maybe a parent should have been there to babysit them. The owner of that home should have been there. Kids act like kids. Stupid that they contributed to their own deaths. Sad that someone gave alcohol to underage kids too.

OIB Fire

I believe the owners were one of the decedents parents, and all of these young adults were old enough to be "home alone." They were not kids. You can't babysit them forever, protect them forever, or live their lives for them. As Gibran said, you're the archer and they're the arrows. You can only do your best as a parent, hope you teach them well, and pray that God protects them. This is a depressingly sad situation, but if it delivers a wake-up call to a few thousand college students who subsequently clean up their act, their lives will not have been wasted.

Of Course

It's sad, but it comes as no surprise
