Azalea Festival Parade will begin with special flyover

U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre announced today that he has requested and secured permission from the Pentagon for a flyover to honor NC's military families at the beginning of Saturday's Azalea Festival Parade.

Congressman McIntyre announced that four Osprey Marine aircraft from New River Air Station at Camp Lejeune will fly over downtown Wilmington at 9:00 a.m. at the start of the parade during the singing of the National Anthem.

McIntyre said the special flyover honors those who have put their lives on the line to secure our freedoms and honors their families who have sacrificed so much for our nation's security.

McIntyre is a senior member of the Armed Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and was asked by Frances Lamb of the Azalea Festival Committee to obtain the flyover.

The aircraft are part of the 2nd Marine Air Wing of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

I think it is a good idea for a fly-by. We have a hero right here with us and it is a perfect time to show some respect for our troops.....They can fly and practice so let them fly to Wilmington. It is nothing unusual to see them fly over but today would be a perfect time. For "MUNLEY" sake...

Don't worry, it will take nothing short of a miracle to get 4 Osprey in the air at the same time on such short notice. They may be safe, but one would be accurate to describe them as unreliable. Trust me on this one.

What kind of trash are you trying to spew about our Marines?
Go to Jacksonville and you can see them flying all day long.

First to address the safety issues. Perhaps you are blind, but we have Ospreys flying over Wilmington weekly doing touch and goes at ILM. Flying over schools, downtown, busy highways. Do you feel this is unsafe? Absolutely not, there is more risk getting on Market Street any day of the week than going to the Azalea Festival Parade and having a flyover.

Second issue. Having these jets perform a flyover in reality will cost very little. More likely than not they will be on a training flight anyway and probably will fly between Cherry Point and Charleston for routine business anyway with a minimal detour to Wilmington. These military jets fly along the coastal Carolinas daily, a slight detour to honor military families and make the festival better is hardly an unnecessary waste of money. Stop being a Grinch and show a little patriotism and respect for the military!

I agree with Office Fan 100 %..

Yes, this is a great idea. We just had one of these aircrafts crash TODAY in Afghanistan killing 4 and injuring many more. With the history of these aircrafts why would ANYBODY think it a good idea to have them do a fly over during a heavily populated event?? McIntyre WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!?!?!

You should do your research and stop jumping to conclusions. The Osprey at one time did have a bad safety record, but many of those issues have been fixed or are currently being fixed. Planes crash all the time. Just because one crashed in Afghanistan (most likely by enemy fire) doesn't mean they are defective. Keep in mind this is the FIRST TIME an Osprey has crashed during operations in a war zone. They also perform their MAGTAF demo at airshows all the time. Did anyone die then? Nope. So please, do your homework before you blab your mouth about things you don't understand.

Back to the article...It would have been cool if the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds had done a fly-by. I'd actually get up early to see that.

Who is paying for these 4 aircrafts to fly over the Azalea Festival to "honor" military families? With all of the SEVERE budget issues, this is just waste. What would be so wrong with making an honorary speech instead? Unbelievable.

These are the individual's that pay for those planes!! They pay with their lives so people like you can enjoy 'FREEDOM OF SPEECH", because if you were in any other country you more than likey be put to death de-nouncing the military and asking WHY??

You go to work?? Do you go to malls freely?? Do you drive a car?? Do take your family to sporting events? Do you happen to have your office in a Sky Scraper in NY City?

You are the type who wakes up in the morning not thinking about the mother who has not gone to sleep for days, due to her 17 year old or 18 or 26 year old being in a fire fight......She listen's to CNN two day's prior.

She cries in silent looking up to the heavens wondering what her child is thinking; "Is he cold? Or is she? Do they know I LOVE him or her?? Did I tell them how proud I was of them? Did I tell them that I loved them so much?? Praying for a word or a sign...........

I would dig ditches to pay for those men and women who are protecting you and me!!! Any day of the week!! Only for WE AMERICAN'S TO SAY "THANK YOU!!!"!!!!!!!

Did you say that you were an AMERICAN? Please forgive me, I missed that part........

I see what is happening here, and you are at fault here...........You are spoiled and have no pride! Only to make such a comment, tells me you have no backbone.............This Country will be in trouble if we allow voices like your's to be heard............

Heck, I dare say this is poll to see how many
True Blooded American's Are Left Out Here..........So thank you for being played like a fiddle!!! Bravo!

I paid for it. With four years of my life to the US Navy. What did you give?

associated with this is peanuts compared to the dollars spent when Obama flew to Charlotte to pat himself on the back or the cost for her Majesty and an entourage of 23 to fly to Hollywood or the cost to send her to DC on some school funding gambit which failed to achieve its goals.

If you want to stop waste, start there with 2 leaders who have no sense that the economy is broken, the state and federal coffers are empty; and yet they continue making outrageous promises to the unworking entitlement grabbers with no idea on where the funds will come from other than from the sweat of the working taxpayer.

Keep them on the ground and in their offices until they fix the budget and come up with a plan to stop these socialistic spending practices.

"America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but it's people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves. To quote the humorist Kin Hubbard, "It ain't no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be." It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their "betters". The meanest eating and drinking establishment owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on it's wall asking this cruel question: "If you're so smart, why ain't ya rich?" There will also be an American flag no bigger than a child's hand glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register."
Slaughterhouse Five---Kurt Vonnegut, American author and WWII POW. In other words, How about a little empathy and perspective?

This is directed to "THE COST".

Please specify what you meant by "unemployed entitlement grabbers." There are alot of unemployed out there that ARE entitled. Don't think you couldn't be one of them in a blink of an eye, or do you have all the money in the world and dont have to worry about it. So make sure you specify who you are talking about.

All I can say is WOW!! This entire dialog is an embarrassment and it sincerely pains me to read. I found this "conversation" because I was trying to find some pictures of the fly over this morning so that I could show my family what I do. Yes I was one of the pilots in the fly-over, and now I wish I hadn't bothered wasting my time reading this but since I did i would like to make a few corrections.

1. You were never in any danger. The same FAA standards and regulations apply to us as the commercial airlines flying over your houses.

2. To speculate about the circumstances and causes of Air Force CV-22 crash of a few days ago is pure ignorance.

3. Yes the Blue Angels or the Thunder Birds would have been worth getting out of bed for. It is there job to do air shows. Mine is to support the infantry men on the ground, not to impress you.

Respectfully Submitted,

This is addressed to aservant.... All I can say is God Bless You for the job you do, so that the people that comment on here can do so!!!

aservant,

I would like to thank you for all that you do for your country and for your countrymen.

Please don't let the ignorant comments in this post get to you. Too many people are aware of their constitutional rights without realizing that those rights were bought and paid for with blood, service and sacrifice. If more people considered the source of their freedoms they might have a little more respect for those who have served or are serving their country.

Again, thank you for your service.

Amen to surfcitytom!!! You are so right. By the way, I do so enjoy all your posts!
