The Azalea Queen was out fulfilling some royal duties Thursday. Amrapali Ambegaokar and her court visited the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The new wing opened in September. The kids got autographs from the queen, Miss North Carolina, Miss Wilmington and others who went from room to room to meet them. Everyone's favorite part seemed to be watching the kids play the drums. "Doing something like this brings you to reality, and it's very humbling,” said Azalea Festival Queen Amrapali Ambegaokar. “It makes you grateful for having what you have and hoping you can give back and share with other people." Azalea Festival President Sherman Lee Criner said, "We're here for 45 minutes to an hour to try to put a smile on a child's face this morning and make the visit worthwhile for them. I know it's been very heart-warming and touching for all of us here today." Criner said the point of the visit was to bring the Azalea Festival to the children who would not otherwise have the chance to enjoy the festivities.
