Baby has toes chewed off by pit bull

An Onslow County couple is charged with child abuse after their 4-month old child had his toes chewed off by a dog. Deputies say Robie Lynn Jenkins and Tremayne Spillman were dog-sitting for their friend's pit bull overnight. Jenkins told authorities she was on medication, and didn't hear the baby cry out in the night, even though she was sleeping in the same room as him. She said she discovered his injuries when she was changing his diaper in the morning. The baby was taken to the hospital, where he may have to have his foot amputated. Jenkins and Spillman are now facing charges of felony child abuse.

How about these facts...

There are a lot of comments stating that pit bulls are not family dogs and that they are very dangerous. The truth is that EVERY breed of dog can be deemed dangerous at one point. Is it the dogs fault? Should ALL of the breed be considered dangerous and be banned in a lot of places like the pit bull? NO! There are no "bad dogs" just bad owners. The ONLY reason pit bulls have such a bad reputation is because they are the NO.1 choice for dog fighters. It has been proven, by many temperament tests, that this is mainly because the pit bull is very loyal to its owner. You want a cold hard fact??? Here's one for ya: "According to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association, 82.5%of the American Pit Bull Terriers that took the temperament test passed, compared to a 77% passing rate for all breeds on average." And also: "Pit Bulls have achieved the fourth highest passing rate of all 122 breeds tested." Don't believe me??? Look it up. You can find these and other facts on http://thetruthaboutpitbulls.com/ and also on http://www.hsus.org/. Don't go by what other people say. Just because people say that pit bulls and other breeds of dogs are more dangerous than others. I have owned pit bulls all my life...the pit i have now and my 2 year old daughter have basically grown up together. We got our pit about a month before my daughter was born and she never once acted aggressive toward any of us and neither have the other pits we have had. They were all just as lovable as can be. Our pit even sleeps beside my daughter's crib whenever she sleeps and any time she falls asleep on the couch or something, our pit curls up next to her. I can't find the article right now, but there was a case not long ago about a couple who left their baby in her crib while they went to make her bottle. They also left their dog, a pomeranian, in the room with her. The couple heard the baby screaming, so they ran in. Before they could get in the room in time, the dog had already jumped in the baby's crib and bit her face off and killed her instantly. A POMERANIAN!!!!! Do research before you say something next time please. And don't just focus on all the negative things you read about pit bulls.

cheryl i highly disagree

cheryl i highly disagree with u..what does the way or where they live have to do with anything......how close minded are u???

unfit mother for child or dog

Obviously this woman is not fit to raise a child or a dog. This is a horrible example of selfish and stupid behavior. Unless she was passed out cold from her "meds" she is bound to have heard that child screaming and just ignored him. Poor baby, please let someone who deserves a child raise him!

dog

first you don't leave any strange dog around kids.if you are watching a dog who may or may not have been around kids PUT THE DOG IN THE YARD.in a way you cant blame the dog its the mom and dad who should have been watching better.there are no bad dogs just owners who make them that way

Baby/Pittbull

OMG - WHAT KIND OF MOTHER IS SHE? HOW DO YOU KNOW HEAR YOUR CHILD SCREAMING AND CRYING? WHY WAS THE BABY NOT IN A CRIB OR SOMETHING WHERE HE BELONGED? IT IS NOT THE DOGS FAULT, IT IS ALL IN HOW IT IS RAISED TO BE. I HAVE HAD PITTBULLS ALL MY LIFE AND HAVE NEVER HAD ONE TO BITE OR HARM ANYONE. THE MOTHER AND HER WONDERFUL BOYFRIEND ON THE OTHER HAD NEED TO HAVE THERE TOES CHEWED OFF, THE CRAP BEAT OUT OF THEM AND THE LOCKED UP FOR LIFE. THIS IS JUST PLAIN REDICULIOS.....

Pit Bull vs Baby

This is exactly why dogs should be kept outside. Animals are animals. They can bite at anytime. It's a shame how dogs are humanized.

I don't know if you have any

I don't know if you have any animals, but i do. If they are trained properly and like someone has already said, they obviously weren't fit to raise a baby nor a dog. its not the dogs fault.

Is it just me?

Another Pitt Bull attack? NO trend here? "Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios, and their mixes were responsible for 74% of attacks studied and 65% of fatalities." according to an in depth study in the U.S. and Canada between 1982 and 2006 by Merritt Clifton. Of course the owners must ultimately be responsible BUT there are certain breeds that are more prone to aggressive behavior and Pitt Bulls lead the way. There is fact after fact to back this up. NO trend here? Right?

Ah, but, they don't lead the way

Whichever list you go to, there are several other breeds more likely to bite; chows, dacshunds, cocker spaniels, huskies...remember, too, that the infant who was recently almost castrated and required hours of reconstructive surgery was attacked by a husky. I doubt that this infant in Jacksonville was truly attacked. The dog was probably bored and simply regarded the baby's foot as a tasty chew-toy. (I recently had a friend's pit bull eat one of my flip-flops when he was bored.) It's not hard to find pit bulls that are big, lovable babies who won't hurt a fly. No, blame rests solely on the parents. They should never have let a neighbor's dog access to that baby....and pardon my cynicism but medication? Likely SELF-medication!

Depends I Spose....

There are a lot of various sources leading to the same basic facts out there, that is true. OK then, I'll put them in the top 5 given the range of discrepancies in various reports but they ultimately point back to the same thing. The facts clearly state that pitt bulls, rottweilers, chows and wolf-hybrids are the most dangerous dogs. Period. Fact. Now I think that the German Shepard should also be included. That's only my opinion but there is substantial evidence that would point to that being a valid opinion as well. I agree there are exceptions to every breed, and I used to raise dogs, but the overall nature of a breed is what you go by. You simply do not get a pitt if you are looking for a "family" dog. They are not known for that and common sense will tell you that. Can they be handled? Yes by a competent and diligent owner that is aware of the responsibility in owning one. It seems that the majority of issues occur when an aggressive pitt meets an irresponsible owner! On another note I saw yesterday that a pitt had bitten and flattened all 4 tires on a police car in one of our northern counties. Never known my golden to do that!!

about the comment titled...Depends I Spose....

look i had a pit for a while and u cant change my mind about him being a family dog..i had 2 kids at the time, had a family member with three kids living with me at that time..and not once did he even snap or show aggresion towards anyone of them..and these kids ages ranged from newborn-5......they would jump on him and just do the things a kid would do while playing with any kind of dog.....i have also had a full blooded german sheperd and she was the sweetest thing u ever met........she not once ever showed aggression or anything....sooo for u to put certain dogs in a "non family dog" category is crazy....i believe it is how u raise the animal...its the same as raising a child...if u are mean to the child, abuse the child to get what u expect of him, dont feed the child, dont show love to the child.......really how do u expect them to be when they r grown.....just like a dog would be if it was treated that way.....mean,hurtful,non-trustworty, the list can go on and on.......................it makes me sad to think 90% of these ppl who mistreat an animal has kids........its just crazy...........so all in all...this is the mothers fault.....if i house sit a dog and i dont know the dog...yes it would be kept in a cage, or outside while my family slept...it wouldnt matter what breed it is.........any dog can turn on anyone.......i hope the parents get what they deserve .....and they will.................

Very well stated!!!

Finally, someone put his comments into a concise paragraph that means everything about this issue. "The pitt is not a family dog...", and "...the majority of issues occur when an aggressive pitt meets an irresponsible owner!" That's as clear as it gets! Sure, any dog can bite, but there are a select few breeds that remove the entire face of a child from a single snap or continue mauling until an adult is dead!

pitbulls need to go

Dog attacks are now the No. 1 reason that children wind up in hospital emergency rooms. Incredibly, nearly half of all American kids have been bitten by the age of 12. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that more than $100 million gets spent yearly treating dog bites in the nation's emergency rooms, and U.S. insurance companies paid out $250 million in dog-bite liability claims in 1996. Pit bulls and pit-bull crosses (not always easy to distinguish) have caused more than a third of the nation's dog-bite fatalities since 1979 and a comparable proportion of serious injuries. You would have never have read about a poodle or a tick hound eating the toes off a baby. Pitbull owners need to register their dogs, same as someone would if they raised lions or wolves. Better yet, just do away with these dogs, all of them! People aren't smart enough to care for them properly.

Where are these stats from

These are not facts. The number one reason children are in emergency departments is fever.

Really

I'd say it comes down to how people raise their dogs. What people seem to not understand about the Bully breeds is they only want to please their masters. My Pit (Jordan is her name) would take a bullet for me. I have had dogs my whole life and have never had a companion as loyal as her. If I had raised her to be a killer, she would gladly kill for me. Before you condemn a breed remember that all dogs are different. I read an article about a pomeranian that killed a newborn at one point.Judging dogs based of heritage is a step away from judging people the same way.

We agree there

I agree with you on that John. I have a rottweiler that is a large baby. I have had two other rottweilers and a doberman that all were as friendly as a goofy lab. He would just assume roll over and give you his tummy to rub. The reason rottys and pits get the headlines is the damage they can do when they are owned by irresponsible people.

come on people......look at

come on people......look at where they live...i say we shoot the parents instead of the dog............dog did not know better but the parents did............

I agree with Cheryl

Definately agree... just like a manufacturing line has duds... society does too. What makes you think they dont. The parents should have their toes eaten off.

People these days.....

Why would you be able to dog sit when you can't even take care of your child. The dog needs to die and the parents need to be in jail. A pit bull don't care who they bite. Pit bulls have alot to do with why we don't feel safe taking that summer walk. The pits are not the problem the owners are. These dogs are known for attacking kids. The question is what are they thinking about? Why was this kid attacked? Ok because you were high and sleep . Thats a sad excuse for a mother. How do we know that the mother did not chew the toes off. She sleep until the next morning geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.GOD bless this child to recieve great parents that would love the child as they do themselves.

Any dog can attack anyone! A

Any dog can attack anyone! A dog must be properly trained and if you don't have the time or patience to train them don't get them. The pit bull is not the problem, the mother is!! Why would any responsible mom take a medication so strong that she can not hear her 4 month old baby? Where was dad, was he high too? Why would responsible parents bring a strange dog around their baby? I feel sorry for the child, he needs to be placed with a family that will responsible and look out for him as good parents.

Sad

This story is sad yet disgusting. It is not even worth commenting on. I feel sorry for the innocent child. The parents and the child need our prayers.

I feel for that little boy.

I feel for that little boy. However, I do not have an ounce of pity for his mother, his father, or the dog. No matter what the excuse is, that little boy was not given the protection he deserves. It does not matter what breed the dog was--even if it had been a Chihuahua--it needs to be "put down" now! I hope that the courts give the max sentence to the parents. Especially to the mother, who was supposedly in the "SAME" room.

What kind of medication is

What kind of medication is prescribed to a mother of a four month old that is so strong she will sleep through a baby screaming? Truly, this is one time you cannot blame the dog. Strange dog, not used to the baby, looked friendly as can be on tv, everybody in the house is passed out, he probably got a response out of the baby and if the baby smelled like milk..... And where was this baby sleeping? Instead of in his crib in the bedroom, sounds like everyone had passed out in the living room with the dog running loose in the house. At some point, people have got to start taking some personal responsibility. A lady I work with has a four year old niece (in another state)whose mother turns her out on her own to run the neighborhood unsupervised. She managed to get into a yard where there was a dog and started messing with his food dish, etc. and the dog bit her. This entire family is up in arms because the county will not go onto these people's property and confiscate this dog and euthanize it. Four year olds have no business being outdoors without parental supervision in the first place. The dog was in his own yard minding his own business in a fence. I'm glad that dog is getting a break and I hope this one does too.

AMEN!!! Irresponsible people

AMEN!!! Irresponsible people do not need to have CHILDREN or PETS!! I feel so sorry for this baby, but this is not the dog's fault. This poor child is going to suffer because of neglect from the parents. The dog is a puppy for heaven sakes and using the foot for a chew toy. This is ALL the parents fault, not the dogs. Bless this poor child!

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?! DIDN'T HEAR?!?! COME ON NOW, WHAT KIND OF "MEDICATION" ARE YOU TAKING THAT YOU CAN'T HEAR YOUR CHILD (IN THE SAME ROOM WITH YOU) CRYING...NO...SCREAMING AS THEIR TOES ARE BEING CHEWED...CHEWED...BY A PIT BULL??? AND WHY DIDN'T DAD GET UP AND CHECK ON THE CHILD OR WAS HE "MEDICATED" AS WELL? WHY WAS THE DOG EVEN ABLE TO GET NEAR THE CHILD MUCH LESS CHEW THE TOES? THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND THE MAIN REASON "SOME" PEOPLE JUST DON'T NEED TO REPRODUCE. IT'S A SAD THING BECAUSE IN THESE SITUATIONS IT'S ALWAYS THE CHILDREN THAT SUFFER MOST. I WAS A SOCIAL WORK FOR 4 YEARS AND YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU CAN SEE GOING OUT TO THESE HOMES. I PRAY THIS CHILD DOES NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH AN AMPUTATION AND THAT IT IS PUT INTO A SAFER MORE NUTURING ENVIRONMENT WHILE MOM AND DAD GET THE HELP THEY NEED TO BE BETTER HUMAN BEINGS.

There are so many things

There are so many things wrong with this story, I don't even know where to start! How would a dog, any dog, larger than 10 lbs be able to gnaw the toes off a child without the entire foot? How did the parents not hear this? Why would they let a dog they are babysitting in a room they are sleeping in? Really? I think there is more to it than these sick, poor excuse or parents are telling. I wouldn't be surprised if they did something. This dog is the one who is going to pay for it, I guarantee you, the parent's won't I'm sure.....

RE There are so many things

I agree, a dog like that would be able to "chew" off way more than toes of a 4 mo. old. I think this dog was more than likely playing at first then maybe kicking from the baby made the dog angry, the dog was acting like the animal that it is, in any case, the baby was left alone with a dog that was in a strange place with strangers that were, I dont know, "high"? perhaps? We know the mother was & by the looks of the place, most likely everyone else. & didnt the guy say he was watching the dog for the neighbor that was in jail? So I dont want to hear from that person a few comments back about how just because where they live looks like that says anything about who they are, I mean, did you see their mugs shots on the news? Your right, the whole thing is wrong on SO many levels & Pit Bulls should be sold like guns, with some sort of background check and a permit if at all.

I'm with dehr. Wouldn't the

I'm with dehr. Wouldn't the baby have lost a lot of blood? As in laying in a pool of blood? Certainly as painful as that knawing would be, wouldn't the baby be in shock or something equivalent? Something is not adding up...

You know, I was wondering if

You know, I was wondering if maybe it was mice or a rat and they were blaming the dog instead. Did you see the dog on tv? Friendly as can be.

This story makes me want to

This story makes me want to throw up. What kind of people sleep through a baby crying as a dog chews its toes off? I'm sure we'll hear all about how remorseful they are. WHATEVER! Keep taking your drugs "mom and dad", get your slap on the wrist from our wonderful justice system for this horrendous crime and reproduce more children you're obviously not smart enough to take care of. I'll pray DSS takes this baby, foster care cannot be worse than having your little piggies gnawed off by a freakin' dog. SICK, SICK, SICK
