Side Bar on Front Street is one of five bars in a recent string of burglaries and attempted break-ins. Owner Clark Shay tells NewsChannel 3 someone used a handtruck from the bar to steal a safe from his bar early Monday morning. He says the handtruck was later found at Fibber McGee's, another bar, just off Wrightsville Avenue.
James Hedyma, the manager of Fibber McGee's, said, "We're here to give the public a place to release and it's a shame that somebody wants to come in and take the money and maybe even ruin the business of people that are just trying give everybody a good time."
Sweet and Savory is a restaurant across the street from Fibber McGee's. The general manager of Sweet and Savory, Dave Herring, said , "This used to be a pretty good neighborhood but with a lot of the new businesses coming in and late night party crowd, I guess that's where that came from."
Police say other bars that were hit early Monday morning are Run Runners on Front Street, Linda's Lounge on Carolina Beach Road, and Reggie's Bar on 42nd St.
David Wallen live across the street from Reggie's Bar and said he was not aware of a break in. He told NewsChannel 3, "It really doesn't affect my feelings any. I regret to hear that for the owner of the bar and all. But it happens everywhere unfortunately nowadays."
These cases have been assigned to detectives but police say it's too early to determine if these incidents are connected.
BARS ROBBED
My car broke down a couple of weeks ago and I had to wait until my husband got off work to go back and pick it up....he is a mechanic! Anyway we were driving down front street and to our amazement there was a brawl in front of the bar Side Bar. It was in the middle of the street....blood everywhere. What really amazed me was the police were standing on the sidewalk just watching....WHAT!!! Anyway my entire point to this is that I wonder if the police will be so quick to help solve these robberies like they were about the fighting.(breaking it up). This really concerned me! I don't party, drink etc. and am never out this late (2:30 am). This time was only because of my car....but please...my goodness surely I don't condone drinking etc. but maybe these people at these bars are trying to make a decent wage! We did go into the new bar across the street Charlie Brownz's on Sunday at 6 pm and it was wonderful. Young men who said they were new management...starting out slow and wanting to change how people felt about downtown area. The bar/grill was very clean wonderful atmosphere....small menu but the owners tell me they hope to be open for lunch. No riff faff at this place and no smoking inside....WE LOVE IT...although they provide smoking at a outside patio. Anyway I thought I would throw that in just to say not all bars/grills are bad places and please law in forcement help the good ones stay in business!!

Just maybe if the police had been using those really cool new segways they could have pulled a "pit maneuver" on the guys fighting and put a stop to it ASAP!
Or, I can just see it now! The Wilmington city cops out patrolling and filming high speed sidewalk chases on COPS (tv show). Then we, as area citizens, could take special pride in the job they do and the fame they bring to the good city of Wilmington. After all, Wilmington is not new to the spotlight.
Drunk in public arrests would skyrocket because there isn't a person out there that would not fall over laughing at a cop on a Segway shining a bright flashlight down on them in the eyes asking if they had been drinking. Falling down laughing at a sight such as that would lead to many convictions.
The preceeding post was such a blatent plug for the bar mentioned that it was just shameful.

And you go Cops of Wilmington....keep watching for Bar Hopper i'm sure you'll see the cab flying/speeding downtown or parked illegal with all the out of town people they bring to downtown....what a joke!LOL!!!!!
KEEP THE GOOD ONES
You may think the post was a plug for the bar Charley Brownz's....but my opinion is if there were more bars like this one down town....RESPONSIBLE.....CLEAN....TRYING TO KEEP A BETTER IMAGE OF A BAR!!!! then we might not see what I witnessed with the police. I realize the police (or I do now) have their hands full. Put the irresponsible bar owners out of business and keep the good ones. More of use need to support the people who are trying to change downtown. Like one of the other post stated it is pretty scarry there at night....but if everybody tries to clean up it could be a great place once again. So CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT....I WILL KEEP REFERRING PEOPLE TO THIS CLEAN BAR AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND ALL THE RIFF RAFF THAT YOU SEEM TO PREFER WILL VANISH LIKE YOU HOPEFULLY!!

Since you like to shout during posts and make mountains out of mole hills, I'll just have to assume that you really connected to the establishment in question.
From now on when I make the Airport/Hotel to downtown runs with out-of-towner fairs I will make every effort that they get to see a more peaceful side of the downtown scene without the rude people like you. I will not be taking anywhere near bars like the one you think so much of.

There never was an intent to shout sorry...I really did not think about the caps being on until you stated "shouting". I don't need to shout and I have no clue who owns the bar My husband and I went into....we do not drink...but we have friends who like to go out have a drink in a clean place with pretty good music, take a walk etc. I will proably never go to this place again....simply because I don't drink and I am never downtown....why are you so insistent that I own this place or have something to do with it...are you kidding!! whatever....maybe you own one of the loser bars I was talking about...anyway...oh I think Wilmington downtown will survive without your so called out of town people....what a loser oh and rude.

It is not nice to go downtown anymore at night at all even if you aren't going to the bars. My husband and I went to take pictures of Prince William the boat. I was scared to death just riding through there to get to the parking deck. It is shameful that so many drunks are walking the sidewalks trying to get to their next bar down the street. Not to mention that all of them will end up in cars at 2am. The police most definetly have their hands full at that time. My husband plays in a band and I have been there at that time and I have seen how people at 2am just stand around and gather in the middle of the streets not sure where they are and where they are going. So before you go pointing fingers at the cops and the the person who is posting comments on here, I just wonder how many times you have walked downtown drunk as pee and how many times you have drove drunk and stood in the middle of the rode drunk also. Are you one of the people that the police have had to deal with? Use your brain that god gave you !!!!

really i was just poking fun at the cops downtown. yes i have been down there and no i do not worry. and no, as a cabbie that drives the idiots around you can thank me for getting as many home safely as i can.

So which cab company you work for Bar Hopper? As a cop with a brain I didn't really see the humor in it either. Maybe it's the fact that I deal with so many drunks down there. Or maybe it's all the idiot cabbies who park where they want to, block travel lanes, speed back and forth between fares on Market. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that people have the sense to take a cab home but picking on the cops who are just doing thier jobs leads me to wonder how many run-ins with the law Bar Hopper has had in the past( or maybe the future).

Thank you "I've got a brain" Fletcher James. You are so right about speeding cabbies...they think they own the road and yes they do park anywhere...so get them. I agree we should be glad someone is driving the drunks home but listen if the cabbies were not making a buck they would drive right pass them. I think the Bar hopper needs to find a new crowd because so far no one think he/she is cute. I agree with whoever said it....keep the good ones (bars) in business and get rid of the other ones. My sister and I go downtown and some of the places are creepy. Like the one post said we have gone in that one bar Charlie Browns and it really was nice. you don't have to worry about getting hit on like maybe the creepy bar hoppers people he/she drives around. So heck yeah pass the word the cops are great and doing their job and keep the great bars in business like Charlie Browns!!!!Yeah Baby!!!
