Barack Obama raises money in N.C.

READ MORE:

CHAPEL HILL (AP) -- A low-key visit to North Carolina for Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

The Illinois senator held a private fund-raiser last night in Chapel Hill, home turf to fellow Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. The cost was $1,000 a person.

Obama's campaign didn't make him available for interviews, photographs, or any public appearances. The media was kept beyond shouting distance when Obama met earlier in the day with local political leaders in Durham.

Many presidential candidates are using North Carolina as a political ATM. They raise money here and spend it in early primary and caucus states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Voters in North Carolina are largely ignored because the state's presidential primary isn't until May.
