The race for New Hanover County Commission was a heated battle with at least one new member being elected. Five candidates competed, but there could only be three winners. A few candidates for New Hanover County Commissioner watched the results at the New Hanover County Government Center Tuesday night. Nervous about the results of the election, those nerves turned to excitement when unofficially Democrat Jonathan Barfield and Republicans Jason Thompson and Ted Davis were elected County Commissioner. The two newcomers are already discussing issues they will address as commissioners. “First item of business would be to get water and sewer to Castle Hayne,” said Barfield. Jason Thompson added, “One of the first things is, let’s get some curbside recycling and pick-up like we have in the city. That's one of the first things I’m going to work on.” Bill Kopp lost his seat on the county commission last night. Nancy Pritchett lost her seat in the Republican primary back in May. Board of Electiions said there was a 70 percent turnout for the election this year. Julia Boseman beat Michael Lee in the 9th District Senate race by 3 percent.
