The holiday weekend has not even officially begun and already there have been some scary moments at the beach. This morning, five people were caught in a rip current and then pulled from the water off Carolina Beach. They are all okay now, but it is a good reminder about safety guidelines that people need to follow. If you do get caught in a rip current, do not panic, and swim parallel to the shore. Lifeguards are also on duty to keep an eye on swimmers. The Ocean Rescue Director, Charles Smith, says "we are encouraging everyone to use extreme caution and to check with the lifeguard for the area that you are going to be swimming in and around and the lifeguard can help point out these rips if you're not familiar with them." Also, pay attention to the flags that tell you the swimming conditions in the ocean. Green means it is safe to swim, yellow means swim with extreme caution and a red flag means that lifeguards recommend that you do not swim. So, have fun this weekend, but follow the rules and stay safe!
