THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO BRUNSWICK COUNTY

I BELIEVE THE "BEST STORY" OF 2007 (SHOULD BE KNOWN AS) "THE WORST STORY" WAS ON SHERIFF RONALD E. HEWETT. YOU TOOK A MAN THAT HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR THE BRUNSWICK COUNTY COMMUNITY AND TRIED TO RUN HIM IN THE GROUND. THINK ABOUT IT HOW MANY SCANDALS HAS THIS SHERIFF HAD IN THE 15 YEARS OR SO RATHER THEN THE SHERIFFS IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES, SO YOU FINALLY GOT SOMETHING LITTLE AND TRIED TO MAKE REALLY BIG SO YOU WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK DOWN UPON HIM FOR BUT HERE IS THE THING, HE IS THE BEST THING BRUNSWICK COUNTY HAS EVER SEEN AND THAT'S FACTS. PAYTON DIDN'T DESERVE WHAT HAPPEND TO HIM BUT IT'S NOT THE FIRST THING THAT'S BEEN COVERED UP MAYBE THIS ELECTION NEW HANOVER CAN VOTE IN A SHERIFF WHO IS HALF THE MAN AS BRUNSWICK COUNTY HAS HAD FOR YEARS.

Sheriff Hewett Top Story

The story is that Sheriff Hewett is under an investigation by the Federal Government. The story is that no knows why. The story is that he covered up the murder of a Bald Head Island police officer to appease the rich and powerful landowners of the resort island. Well that and illegal campaign contributions.... and video poker.... and failing to report income to the IRS. Other than that there really is no story.

What !?!

Why would any decent person, especially a police officer, want the murder of a police officer covered up? Pretty serious charge there dawg.

Murder cover up?

I haven't heard that rumor. When did that one come out? I thought the investigation was about his use of his deputies for political purposes while on duty and improper financial deals. Since the Sheriff has gone into hiding and refuses to personally discuss it, we'll just have to wait to see who and how many are indicted. I sincerely hope that the investigation concludes that there is no wrong doing on the Sheriff's part, but his actions over the last few months only make him appear that he has something to hide. If he has done no wrong, he should be open and forthcoming. He appears to be following Rep. Wright's lead. Not very good for a politician that has a reputation of always wanting to be on TV. Is this a rerun of the Sheriff Gerald Hege saga?

Best of 2007

Im no sure who it was that said something about New Hanover with the most state championships in the state but I doubt seriously that they have been in Broughton High School in Raliegh...

Read closely

most in basketball...new hanover high school has won 13 state championships alone in basketball and made 18 appearances, most than any other school in the state. (the document says 12, but has not been updated this year.) check it out here: http://www.nchsaa.org/pdf/1132A.pdf

Hugo Neu and Landfills

For me that has to be the story. The fact that a group of people that live in the area fought off a major source of future pollution let's me know that at least some of us still care. We care about the futures of our kids, health of those living in the area, and want to see our area grow in a good way. We didn't need our local scene polluted by being the largest scrap car pile in the USA. Hugo Neu sought to make money on the backs of the people that live in the area and would have been poisoned by their "so called" clean technology landfill practices. If they are so good then why didn't they try to do this in California where there are a lot more cars? Because it eventually kills people, and NC didn't have any laws to protect the people. Now there are new laws, and a great story about how the people of SE NC fought the advances of big corporate greed!

I want my teddy bears damn it!

I think one of the stupidist stories was the girl who married her teacher and all the drama the mommy and daddy did then....I want my teddy bears!!!!!!!

State Champs

New Hanover High School winning the NCHSAA 4A state championship in basketball (they have the same, if not more state basketball championships than any other high school in NC). This story could tie the tradition of the school to the community. Hoggard also winning the football championship in the same year should be in the story. Two huge sports with two local schools taking home the state titles in the same year...very good, and congratulations to both schools and players.

Hollywood

I can see all of these other stories as major news events for 2007. The Peyton Strickland ordeal was tragic for all involved. Regardless of your opinion, it was tragic. Thomas Wright will get his and he can share a cell with Mike Nifond. You treat people wrong, it will come back around. That brings me to my thought on the biggest story of the year. The Federal Grand Jury investigation on Hollywood Ron Hewett. All those deputies being supeonaed to testify and a LOT of them pleading the 5th. What are they hiding from? HMMMMM.

Biggest Hoax of All Time!

Top story has gotta be the biggest hoax of all time.....global warming. This is bigger than the last big hoax, Y2K. You got people flying all over the world having meetings, concerts and endlessly wringing their hands aver something that they can't do anything about. Bunch of idiots on display.

Globel warming by Gut Wrench

Man are you dumb, yes you can do something about globel warming. It's idiots like you who make it an on going problem. Have you noticed no rain, no spring time, no winter...duh..something is going on ...hope it's not to late by the time you figure it out.

Dear Mom....
globel

to late
hmmm.... I'm not sure you have the right to call anyone dumb....... btw... It's going to be 20 something degrees tonight. It sure feels like Winter to me.

Global Warming and the Human Race

Hey MOM! What gives? Show the rest of us the irrevocable, incontrovertible truth based on some factual evidence (something other than a propaganda cherry-data picking movie of Al Gore's.) We can keep our roads clean, we can reduce smog, and we can find alternative cleaner energy. But until it become profitable it isn't going to happen. Until then, while the Suns activity levels go up, the ice caps of Mars will continue to melt as well as the Earth getting warmer. Mars Melt Hints at Solar, Not Human, Cause for Warming, Scientist Says (see link below) http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070228-mars-warming.html Found that interesting. All those dang Martians better stop buying and driving those great big SUV's and such!

Hoax?

Not sure if hoax is the right word, but something similar should make the best stories of 2008 dealing with global warming. All these people that believe in it travel all over the world in their private jets and caravans of suburbans preaching to crowds about it, yet they themselves do nothing to stop it. just like al gore's nobel peace prize, all he did was make a movie and make people panic, he didn't do anything to prevent global warming or change the world. maybe that should be the story 'first nobel peace prize awarded to man who did nothing to help the world.'

The Ocean Isle beach house

The Ocean Isle beach house fire was probably the biggest local story. There's also the thing with the South Brunswick track coach marrying his student. For national news, I think the biggest were the mall shooting in Nebraska and the VA Tech shooting. Also all of the campaign stuff. And hell, let's toss Britney in there cause she's all over the place.

Hoggard winning the State

Hoggard winning the State Championship. AND James Kenan!!! GO TIGERS!

2007 - Major victories over LANDFILLS - here and all over NC

(1) In early April, SIMS HUGO NEU corporation announced they were withdrawing their applications for permits to construct a Landfill in NAVASSA. This Landfill would potentially rise to over 350 feet and contain auto 'fluff' - both of which are terribly undesirable to the citizens of the Cape Fear area. (2) In early August, Governor Easley signed into Law the Waste Management Bill of 2007. This new law imposes much stonger requirements for adding mega Landfills in NC as well as establishes reasonable financial responsibility for those who operate them. This new Law immediately halted the construction of several new mega Landfills proposed to be built throughout NC. The leadership of NC's General Assembly is responsible for these victories. The NC legislators listened to and supported the environmental demands of the citizens of this state.

Hugo Neu without a doubt,

Hugo Neu without a doubt, and Ann McAdams coverage of the story. Great job!

Yes, the same citizens who.....

...will soon be running out of existing landfill space. And then, the tide will turn and we'll welcome new landfills.... ....but not before millions of tons of garbage are simply dumped in the woods, by the roadside, in the river..... The NIMBY compex rarely solves a problem, it just pushes it off 'til another day.

Are you an idiot? Do you

Are you an idiot? Do you know ANY of the details of this story? The bribery and shady workings of local politicians to get this deal done? How about the organized crime connections? Get your facts straight next time.

Thanks, but I have my facts straight

I'm not specifically commenting on the minor Hugo Neu story. I'm talking about the prevailing attitude in this state. This "war against landfills" will bite us in the butt very soon. We seem to view an exploding population as our greatest asset, but each one of those new faces makes couple of tons of trash every year. Where is it going go? In landfills or on the side of the road. It really IS that simple....

Shane Holloway

The Flemington Rd shooting. Please do a follow-up story.

Best story

best and worst story....Peyton Strickland

You're Right

This story was heartbreaking. Once again a cover up for the men in blue...the Strickland family deserved more than what New Hanover County delivered...

got what he asked for

No, peyton got exactly what he asked for by robbing people. Too bad Long got caught up in peytons crap, but he did save us tax money.
