I BELIEVE THE "BEST STORY" OF 2007 (SHOULD BE KNOWN AS) "THE WORST STORY" WAS ON SHERIFF RONALD E. HEWETT. YOU TOOK A MAN THAT HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR THE BRUNSWICK COUNTY COMMUNITY AND TRIED TO RUN HIM IN THE GROUND. THINK ABOUT IT HOW MANY SCANDALS HAS THIS SHERIFF HAD IN THE 15 YEARS OR SO RATHER THEN THE SHERIFFS IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES, SO YOU FINALLY GOT SOMETHING LITTLE AND TRIED TO MAKE REALLY BIG SO YOU WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK DOWN UPON HIM FOR BUT HERE IS THE THING, HE IS THE BEST THING BRUNSWICK COUNTY HAS EVER SEEN AND THAT'S FACTS. PAYTON DIDN'T DESERVE WHAT HAPPEND TO HIM BUT IT'S NOT THE FIRST THING THAT'S BEEN COVERED UP MAYBE THIS ELECTION NEW HANOVER CAN VOTE IN A SHERIFF WHO IS HALF THE MAN AS BRUNSWICK COUNTY HAS HAD FOR YEARS.

Im no sure who it was that said something about New Hanover with the most state championships in the state but I doubt seriously that they have been in Broughton High School in Raliegh...

For me that has to be the story. The fact that a group of people that live in the area fought off a major source of future pollution let's me know that at least some of us still care. We care about the futures of our kids, health of those living in the area, and want to see our area grow in a good way. We didn't need our local scene polluted by being the largest scrap car pile in the USA. Hugo Neu sought to make money on the backs of the people that live in the area and would have been poisoned by their "so called" clean technology landfill practices. If they are so good then why didn't they try to do this in California where there are a lot more cars? Because it eventually kills people, and NC didn't have any laws to protect the people. Now there are new laws, and a great story about how the people of SE NC fought the advances of big corporate greed!

I think one of the stupidist stories was the girl who married her teacher and all the drama the mommy and daddy did then....I want my teddy bears!!!!!!!

New Hanover High School winning the NCHSAA 4A state championship in basketball (they have the same, if not more state basketball championships than any other high school in NC). This story could tie the tradition of the school to the community. Hoggard also winning the football championship in the same year should be in the story. Two huge sports with two local schools taking home the state titles in the same year...very good, and congratulations to both schools and players.

I can see all of these other stories as major news events for 2007. The Peyton Strickland ordeal was tragic for all involved. Regardless of your opinion, it was tragic. Thomas Wright will get his and he can share a cell with Mike Nifond. You treat people wrong, it will come back around. That brings me to my thought on the biggest story of the year. The Federal Grand Jury investigation on Hollywood Ron Hewett. All those deputies being supeonaed to testify and a LOT of them pleading the 5th. What are they hiding from? HMMMMM.

Top story has gotta be the biggest hoax of all time.....global warming. This is bigger than the last big hoax, Y2K. You got people flying all over the world having meetings, concerts and endlessly wringing their hands aver something that they can't do anything about. Bunch of idiots on display.

The Ocean Isle beach house fire was probably the biggest local story. There's also the thing with the South Brunswick track coach marrying his student. For national news, I think the biggest were the mall shooting in Nebraska and the VA Tech shooting. Also all of the campaign stuff. And hell, let's toss Britney in there cause she's all over the place.

(1) In early April, SIMS HUGO NEU corporation announced they were withdrawing their applications for permits to construct a Landfill in NAVASSA. This Landfill would potentially rise to over 350 feet and contain auto 'fluff' - both of which are terribly undesirable to the citizens of the Cape Fear area. (2) In early August, Governor Easley signed into Law the Waste Management Bill of 2007. This new law imposes much stonger requirements for adding mega Landfills in NC as well as establishes reasonable financial responsibility for those who operate them. This new Law immediately halted the construction of several new mega Landfills proposed to be built throughout NC. The leadership of NC's General Assembly is responsible for these victories. The NC legislators listened to and supported the environmental demands of the citizens of this state.
