RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Retired state and local government workers in North Carolina could save about $130 a year on vision and dental insurance after the state treasurer went shopping.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that State Treasurer Janet Cowell thinks a contract with a new insurance broker will save retirees more than $13 million over the next three years.
Cowell's office switched brokers after competitive bidding dropped the politically connected firm that held the business for nearly a decade.
Farmville-based Pierce Insurance outbid State Insurance Services of Raleigh, whose principals include former state Sen. Joe Thomas of New Bern and former Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay. The Democrats raised money for Cowell's predecessor, Richard Moore.
