The Wilmington Police Department divides its patrols into districts based on call volume. The more calls, the smaller the district. The Wilmington Walmart falls into District 5a, the busiest district in the city. “Compared to other businesses that may close at 5 or 9 or 10, they're 24-7. A lot of our calls are either in their parking lot of Walmart, or inside the store itself,” said Wilmington Police Department’s Lt. Kathy Cochran. In the past 6 months the department has responded to more than 600 calls. That is about 3 to 4 calls each day, and officers never know what crime they're going to get. “A shoplifter, larceny in progress, we have 911 hang up. We've had child abuse calls out there, hit and run calls out there, warrant services out there,” said Lt. Cochran. “You name it we've had a lot of calls in that vicinity.” In Monkey Junction, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department responds to the Walmart on Carolina Beach Road about 2 to 3 times per day. Deputy Charles Smith said, “It certainly consumes the deputies time, in taking an initial report, or the number of reports from that outlet as well as following up with an arrest and transportation to the jail.” With the upcoming annexation, the Monkey Junction Walmart will also become WPD's responsibility. The department plans on adding five new officers to help patrol the area. As for Walmart, law enforcement said the employees do what they can to help. “In most cases when deputies respond, the loss prevention officers have their information that will assist in the prosecution of those crimes ready for the deputies upon arrival,” added Deputy Smith.

Really Jamba?

Its the smaller businesses in America that cultivated the society in which we live today. So ask yourself, when there are four small businesses operating, and one large business i.e. WALMART comes along and shuts them down...for "prettier" businesses, what do you think may happen? What may happen when such a thing as all small businesses nationwide were to shut down so that Walmart and Jamba may operate? Can we say lower poverty lines? What were you thinking about? This is THE most corrupt of them all! I despise Walmart!!

Walmart is a Big Benefit

When a new Walmart opens up it brings many benefits to an area. 1. Low prices, great values. 2. Smaller weaker businesses are unable to compete, so they close and newer prettier businesses can open up in their place like Jamba Juice. Mmmm Jamba... 3. It gives a certain group in society a place to meet and congregate, to be with "Their People", something that is badly needed in todays America.

Wal-Mart, hey wake up

Walmart is a huge company- They are doing well and they should absolutely have there own security. Real security, not old men who move so slow and forget about running if need be. (There are companies who have security but are just some old retirees. Nothing against them personaly but you have to be quick and aware.)Wal-Mart stop using our police officers efforts so often. They have enough to do. You are taking money and time away from our town.

WHY is the walmart

Why is the walmart security guard car always parked by the road, You never see sercurity in the store. If walmart would hire some and have them in the stores. That would help.

They do

And the fact that you dont see them means they are doing their jobs. Walmart hires secret in store security whos identity isnt even known to the employees. The employees know that they have them but the people are moved around from store to store and not allowed to use the break room etc. so they are not known. This way they can watch employees as well. They also have permanent in store security that are known to employees. Some of the guys are huge and ex military. I worked there years ago in inventory control, that's how I know.

Wal Mart calls for service

If this was a bar or convenience store downtown, the city would have deemed it a public nuisance and had it shut down for being a congregation place for criminal activity. I know a lot more people visit Wal Mart than these other places, but the sheer volume of calls is astonishing.

...maybe because most of the

...maybe because most of the customers share the same DNA? Support your local businesses!

pay for 24 hour protection

If a business is open 24 hours then they should pay for 24 hour protection. The rest of the businesses are closed at night and paying the same tax rate. Maybe they should offer a" Selling made in usa" protection rate so Walmart could start selling what they promised a long time ago.

Businesses that are closed

Businesses that are closed overnight are still being protected by local law enforcement at that time. This isn't the fault of walmart as some sre implying and it's not their job to prosecute shoplifters etc. That is why they pay taxes.

EVERYBODY gets 24 hour protection

Do you think that the police don't respond to a break-in alarm at a business that is closed? Blaming Wal-Mart for these incidents is the same as justifying a rape because the victim was so attractive. Blame the criminals!

wow...

WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TOO. WHY SHOULD THERE BE ANY PROBLEMS AT WALMART WHY CANT PEOPLE JUST GO IN GET WHAT THEY NEED AND GET OUT. THERE SHOULDNT BE ANY SHOPLIFFTING GOING ON AS MANY PEOPLE AS THERE IS WORKING THERE. EVERYTIME I GO TO WALMART THERES ATLEAST 7 OR 8 WALMART EMPLOYESS AT THE FRONT JUST TALKING WHEN THEY CAN BE DOING THERE JOB AND WATCHING. ITS THERE FAULT. ALL THE CAMERAS IN THERE SOMEBODY SHOULD BE WATCHING THEM. OUR DEPUTIES HAVE TO BE AT WALMART CASE THE EMPLOYESS DONT DO THERE JOB

walmart

Walmart is where all the scum shop along with the decent people. Please people watch yourselves and your purses while in there. I have seen many women get their purses ripped off right under their noses. Use the child restraint belt and loop it through your purse straps, keep one hand on your buggy. I don't shop there any more.

Since Das Weibstuck does not

Since Das Weibstuck does not shop at Wal Mart anymore, probably no need to secure your purses.

haha

Shouldn't make light of it.

Guest1234...whatever.. I was

Guest1234...whatever.. I was there Sunday and watched as the customer...read thief...checked out in front of me. He kept items in his cart. I called attention to several items that he failed to place on the check out line. He placed three of them and acted as if he had forgotten about the items. The clerk then noticed three more items and he very casually placed those items on the check out line. Not sure why she didn't call security at that point. While he walked away, I told her that he STILL had mulptiple items that he hadn't pd for and tried to flag down a manager, and the clerk said "Oh well". What do you do?

Degradation of humanity

If you want to see the worst of what humanity has to offer just go to the Wimington Walmart. If you were to take all the people in that store at a given time and turn the store into some sort of a closed society to perform a sociological experiment it would only take a couple of generations worth of procreation before that human race would take a coupe steps backwards in the evolutionary trail.

Sad, but true. Someone once

Sad, but true. Someone once described the Walmart experience as "being in the waiting area at Department of Social Services." Being in Walmart is like being in some sort of scary sci-fi movie. In communities where Walmart is present, Medicaid costs skyrocket as well as an increase in cost for police services. When will people learn that cheap prices and cheap merchandise can come with a very hefty price tag.
