Big NC school system hiring teachers after layoffs

READ MORE:
CHARLOTTE -- The school district in North Carolina's largest city has laid off hundreds of teachers because of lack of money, but it's looking for 250 new employees. The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools laid off more than 850 employees at the end of the school year. The district is looking for new workers, often because of normal turnover among its more than 19,000 employees. New federal money is creating new jobs at some high-poverty schools. The district is looking for elementary, middle and high school teachers. It needs arts teachers, career-technical teachers, special education teachers, Spanish teachers and counselors and librarians. The district is filling some positions where teachers were laid off because of poor evaluations or lack of proper credentials. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
