Black History lesson proves out of this world

READ MORE: Black History lesson proves out of this world
astronaut300.jpg
Each day this month middle school students from around our area have shared with us stories of famous African-Americans as part of Black History Month. But when West Pender Middle School student Fred White was assigned to research the first black astronaut, he wound up with a truly out-of-this-world experience. Fred's teacher managed to track down Dr. Guion Bluford, who agreed to do a phone interview with Fred. Fred says it he was a bit nervous, but it was exciting to talk with his research subject. "It's more interactive, and it gives you more knowledge of what they're like and what the project's like," Fred said. Fred said if he has the chance to research someone living again, he'd like to talk to them one-on-one. His report on Dr. Bluford will air next week on WWAY NewsChannel3 and be posted here on our website. In the meantime you can watch Fred's complete interview with Dr. Bluford by clicking on the video link at the top of this story.

Bravo!

This project is evidence of what our local students are capable, and of the importance of continuing the tradition of Black History Month.

Wonderful work

I am so impressed with the work of the teacher and the work of this wonderful student. What an excellent way to teach and learn American history.

What an amazing learning experience!

It is so wonderful that this student has had the chance to learn the importance of higher education. It is especially wonderful the he has an example of someone who was an average student yet has achieved great things.

Great job

It's so important not to forget our history, especially the kinds of ambitious and courageous undertakings that Col. Bluford was involved in alongside of so many other Americans. I appreciate Fred giving him the chance to tell a little of his story; I hope many people reflect a little on it and appreciate what amazing things we have accomplished together.

Fantastic school project

This project was an excellent opportunity for a student to learn about history first hand! Thanks WWAY for sharing this story with us.
