Bladen Animal Control puts down animals after distemper in shelter

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Bladen County Animal Control says an outbreak of distemper in its own facility is the worst in 15 years. The disease has killed more than 50 animals in the shelter. Others had to be put down because of it. Animal control says the distemper likely spread from an animal that contracted it before entering the facility.

"When you start having it spread through the facility, then you've got problems, and anybody that's got a large shelter, hopefully you don't ever have to deal with it, but there is always that possibility when you're dealing with the type of animals we are: the strays and the wilds," Bladen Co. Health Director Wayne Stewart said.

Once the remaining animals are put down today, animal control will clean the facility. Administrators recommend getting your pet vaccinated to prevent it from getting diseases like distemper.
