Bladenboro man scrambles toward impossible dream

A 32-year-old Bladenboro man is trying to live out his dream of playing quarterback in the NFL. WWAY's John Rendleman went to Whiteville to see the man who has been labeled the Country Wonder. "I’m ready to show the Carolina Panthers there's another quarterback besides Jake Delhomme - ready to take his spot. I'm coming for you Delhomme," said Columbus County’s Brian Ward. Ward played quarterback at South Columbus High School, but he was not the starter. That was 1993. Sixteen years later he is one step away from an invitation to the Carolina Panthers NFL training camp. "To me it's now or never. It's do or die," stated Ward. A scout saw Brian throw recently. The Panthers apparently want him to send in a video. If they like what they see, an invitation to training camp might come Brian's way. "They're pretty much onto the idea. They just want to see the tape to make it happen," Brain said. Whether the call comes or not, you got to admire Brian for trying despite the obvious obstacle. "Age. It's going to be an uphill battle, but I'm up for it," Brian said. "I've had people tell me this is crazy, but my goal is to play for the Carolina Panthers or whoever." The odds are clearly stacked against Brian Ward making it in the NFL. A thousand to one? A million to one? Who knows? Stranger things have happened in the NFL.

Oh, Rendleman, you've done it again. This may have been better than the Whispering Pines story, but bare-ly. Gotta go, headed to the Muni, I'm thinking about joining the PGA. I'm coming for you Tiger!
Good luck!!!
I give this guy props for even being asked to go to tryouts. Thats a lot more than the people leaving these immature blogs can say. Do you really think a two minute segment can really capture what this guy has to offer? I think its a one in a million chance but somebody has to be that one sometimes. Good luck man. I wish you the best.
Dreams are a wonderful thing to have but I really hope he hasn't quit a good job to pursue this one. Jobs are hard to come by these days and from the looks of the passes he was throwing in this video this particular dream is probably out of reach. I know miracles can happen but he probably has a better chance of winning the lottery than playing football in the NFL. You have to give him credit for trying though. If things don't work out in the NFL I hear they are always looking for good quarterbacks in the Wrightsville Beach flag football league. It doesn't pay as much as the NFL but I hear they have a lot of fun. Good Luck!
flag football man you are stupid he can throw a football 80 yards he was playing around you are a stupid minded person
How many points do you get in the NFL for throwing the ball 80 yards? I'm sorry but you are the stupid one if you think that will get him on an NFL team. The quarterback position is a little more complicated than just being able to throw the ball a long way. I love the way some people trivialize in what it takes to play professional sports. There are a lot of great atheletes that played in high school and college that are selling insurace now because they couldn't make the step up. It's not that simple as I am sure he will find out if he does get a chance to work out for a team. It is not totally impossible though, it has happened once or twice in the history of the game. By the way Brad, did he not know the video was going to be on tv? Why would he choose to goof off instead of really showing what he could do so people would think he really had a chance and pull for him. How serious is he taking this opportunity?
hahahahaha! That is the funniest story I have read in a long time. Either this is a joke, or this dude got caught in a lie thats only getting deeper. Clearly not gonna happen...who in their right mind says...Im coming for you Delhomme?
What makes you think he didn't spend 20 minutes chucking 80 yard bombs, and then goofed around, and thats what they edited to use in the package?
