A 32-year-old Bladenboro man is trying to live out his dream of playing quarterback in the NFL. WWAY's John Rendleman went to Whiteville to see the man who has been labeled the Country Wonder. "I’m ready to show the Carolina Panthers there's another quarterback besides Jake Delhomme - ready to take his spot. I'm coming for you Delhomme," said Columbus County’s Brian Ward. Ward played quarterback at South Columbus High School, but he was not the starter. That was 1993. Sixteen years later he is one step away from an invitation to the Carolina Panthers NFL training camp. "To me it's now or never. It's do or die," stated Ward. A scout saw Brian throw recently. The Panthers apparently want him to send in a video. If they like what they see, an invitation to training camp might come Brian's way. "They're pretty much onto the idea. They just want to see the tape to make it happen," Brain said. Whether the call comes or not, you got to admire Brian for trying despite the obvious obstacle. "Age. It's going to be an uphill battle, but I'm up for it," Brian said. "I've had people tell me this is crazy, but my goal is to play for the Carolina Panthers or whoever." The odds are clearly stacked against Brian Ward making it in the NFL. A thousand to one? A million to one? Who knows? Stranger things have happened in the NFL.
