WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- If you heard explosions near Wilmington International Airport this afternoon, there's nothing to worry about. The Department of Defense set off old explosives in a controlled detonation. The first explosion was set off around 2:30 p.m. followed by the second one 15 minutes later. The DOD asked to use the airport field to make sure the blasts were set off in a safe and secure area.

Why did the Department of Defense and the City of Wilmington allow a controlled explosion to take place with out letting residents know? This explosion was so powerful it shuck the entire house and it sounded as if a cannon exploded in my yard. Many neighboros came out to ask what in God's name is that. I ask the City leaders what has been releaseed from these mines? Was any radiation released? any chemicals? If nothing, why not let me/us know this was a scheduled explosion?
Thank you our city leader for another great job of not thinking about the citizens.

You may want to start looking at the county, considering the airport is county property.
