The Latest on Fay
Submitted by Sonya Stevens on 18 August 2008 - 2:50pm.
Tropical Storm Fay has been the big story in the tropics the past several days. The system brought heavy rain to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba over the weekend. The system crossed over western Cuba last night and has been impacting the Florida Keys today. The storm has been intensifying, but not as quickly as the models thought. As of the 2pm advisory, the winds are only 60 mph, which is still 14 mph below hurricane strength. As the system continues to move over warm water the slow strengthening should continue, but it looks like it won't have time to become any stronger than a CAT 1. Where is Fay headed? That is the big question. On Saturday, the computer models were all over the place. By Sunday, they were in better agreement with the storm forecasted to make landfall near the Florida Panhandle and then riding up into Southern Georgia and the Carolinas as it weakened. Today, however, the models have diverged once again. The track, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, has been moved further toward the east. At this point, the storm could move across Florida and re-emerge over the Atlantic. This would mean more of an impact for us along the North Carolina coast. There are still alot of ifs with this tropical system. The bottom line is that the jury is still out on the exact track of Fay. That's why it's important to stay tuned to WWAY for the latest. We will continue to track this system every step of the way! By: Sonya Stevens N.C. Headlines |

just a thought
If fay has not done they say. my question is What would happen if she stays not moving till let say friday night into saturday and the high pressure moves what then?
Then ...
Then the system could swing back around to the east. Luckily high pressure will keep us "safe" through the weekend. After high pressure moves out next week, the remnants of Fay could move our way and combine with an approaching cold front. This could result in showers and storms for us here along the Cape Fear coast.
