Ask and you shall receive --- here comes some drought-busting rain!

It's a matra I'm sure you'll hear over and over out and about today, "We do need the rain!" It's true. Our deficit has grown uncomfortably high in recent weeks as we've watched a moderate drought take hold across the area.

Before Sunday, Wilmington had seen less than 0.20" of rain all September long. By day's end that total had been matched more than five times over in most towns across the viewing area. Now, the heavy rains are here to stay for what looks to be a while.

A large area of low pressure is tracking up the coast to our west, providing all the means necessary to draw tropical moisture off the oceans and into our area. For today, instability will be high as an upper level low passes overhead meaning there will be the threat for some embedded severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening across southeastern North Carolina.

Looking ahead into the workweek, we're getting all that we bargained for when it comes to rain! As the low makes its way up the coast, the trailing cold front will stall out over our shores - keeping the threat for intermittent heavy rain in our forecast. In fact, it doesn't look like we will actually see a drying influence in our weather until at least Friday, perhaps Saturday.

So how much rain will we get? Totals as of Monday morning are already adding up. By week's end it would not surprise me to see many areas total over 6" of rain in the bucket, just what the doctor ordered for lawns and gardens across the area.

That's all for now. Stay dry out there!
