Restaurant Review: Cosmo's Italian

Slight in stature, and sparing with words Cosmo is my new crush. With snowy white hair and thick, dark-framed glasses this man has captured my heart through his crisp, fresh breads, homemade mozzarella and a seductive puttanesca sauce. Cosmo is quick to relinquish his command at the oven to come make suggestions to the beleaguered diner.

There are other cooks in house, and while I am not entirely sure who is responsible for what dish, Cosmo is the one kneading boules and twirling pizza crusts, standing on tiptoe peering into the broiling hot pizza oven to see if the lasagna is bubbling and the bread browned.

The soups -- from scratch and good, I always hit mine with a wee bit of salt. The house salad is nice with a vivacious vinaigrette (all right it’s not really a food term but who can resist alliteration now and again?). My personal salad favorite is the caprese, which was delicious with the aforementioned mozzarella, great olive oil, balsamic vinegar and fat basil leaves. It was a good surprise having this salad be so tasty considering the kind of garbage tomatoes that are available right now.

Chicken Parmesan is scrumptious-the chicken well flavored and juicy the marinara sauce tart and garlicky. Calzones and strombolis are ridiculously inexpensive and a steal considering the amount of work the Cosmo’s kitchen puts into them!

Obviously the pizza is great when you have homemade sauce, crust and cheese, so I will leave you to order your favorite pizza combo -- the choices are virtually infinite.

All of the pastas are good. There are multiple sauces to from which to choose. The STUFFED PEPPERS, oh, yes -- I love them. (I will say that on my first visit they were ice cold in the middle, however, I went right after they opened and the amount of filling in the peppers is amazing so... we will attribute that small glitch to opening jitters.)

Cosmo’s is a fun place to go for grown ups and kids. It’s also great for a leisurely lunch or dinner, this is good food and it can’t be rushed nor should you be rushed while eating it. The atmosphere is casual and prices are moderate. AND, my personal soapbox/joy, it’s family owned. YAY!

COSMO'S

You will find out alot from this statt at Cosmo's, while Cosmo is there at 5 am in the morning to start the daily fresh breads that is backed and is responsible for all the baking, as Pete who is another to create the recipes that require hours of prep time for his awsome sooups, saces and meals. The little brunette is everything from an office manager, waitress, GAL FRIDAU but always smiling....grest servie..We go about once a week from Jacsonville! Best part is buying a loaf of bread@

As an Italian citizen, I am

As an Italian citizen, I am appalled by what passes as "Italian" food in the U.S. It's not just the fault of American-born people who have never been to Italy; it's also the fault of Italian-American immigrants who have adapted Italian cuisine to appease to American tastes.

Italian cuisine is not all garlic and tomatoes; like American cuisine, there are very strong regional differences. I am frankly tired that the great gastronomic tradition of my country is bastardized daily as a tomato and garlic heavy concoction of spice and cheese and what else.

How about, instead of

How about, instead of complaining on the internet, you go open up your own restaurant. Get a life.

Appalled

Are you one of those charming people that is "appalled" at the selection in Southern bakeries? Notice, the name of the restaurant is Cosmo's Italian-BB is not saying it is the source of all, authentic Italian food in Wilmington. Yes, there are many amazing regional cuisines in Italy, actually in every country BUT Cosmo is every bit as Italian as you are, Oh, pompous one, and he is happy with what he makes and serves and of the 20 some odd meals I've enjoyed there maybe 4 of those items were in a garlic tomato sauce. There are planes leaving from ILM to JFK to Rome, Italy every day. Perhaps you should return.

Italian food

A chef is a person who purveys good food for a profit. Of course Italian-American chefs have adapted their cuisine to American tastes; that's what Americans like. The food and beverage industry doesn't survive on philosophy, it survives on profit...JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! If you have a problem with that I would suggest that you (a) Patronize a restaurant that serves authentic regional cusine (there are plenty of them; too bad you didn't take the time to apparently find even one), (b)Start your own religion based entirely on the concept of exclusively eating Italian regional cusine or (c)Go back to Italy and find something else to find fault with.

Viva COSMO

My family and I LOVE COSMO and COSMO's!!! Maybe in Italy, "When in Rome....", but here, COSMO's is great. Wonderful, friendly atmosphere with excellent food-THE WAY WE LIKE IT!!!!
