ANOTHER TERRIBLE TUESDAY...

When I was very young, I remember watching the old National Weather Service film "Terrible Tuesday" in school. The film documented the famous "Red River Tornado Outbreak" of 1979, as tornadoes ripped though Texas and Oklahoma. The images were cold and frightening, especially to a pair of young eyes.

While the recent February tornado outbreak in the southeastern US will never match the ferocity of the Red River Outbreak, many of images are similar. It's just another reminder that tornadoes can happen anywhere, anytime. Of course, it takes a powerful storm system to correct the absurdly warm temperatures we've enjoyed over the past few days.

Several new record highs were set on February 5th and 6th when temperatures soared into the 70's and 80's. Remember, the typical high temperature for early February is about 59 degrees. February is also one of the notorious "transition" months in which average highs climb quickly. On February 1st, we're just passing the coldest part of the winter. By February 28, Spring is only a few weeks away.

Regardless of the changes in weather, one thing is certain. You should always be prepared- and sometimes even that is not enough...
