READ MORE: Body found in Cape Fear River identified

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Police are investigating the discovery of a woman's body in the Cape Fear River Sunday. The surprising discovery happened several hours before thousands of people packed in to Downtown Wilmington to see the city's 4th of July fireworks show.

A Wilmington Fire Department boat helped pull the body out. Police have identified the victim as 26-year-old Joanne Dacuno. Investigators at this time are still trying to figure out just how the Greenville resident ended up in the water.

So far police officials say there is no signs of injury to Dacuno's body. Her autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

Missing you

I think we are all in shock. You were such a beautiful, inspiring, kind, fun person. Always living life to the fullest and never speaking a negative word about anything or anyone. You were a great nurse- I'm sure- you worked so hard to reach your goal. I will hold close the memories we had together and the great 2 years we lived together. So many people will be missing you and we will not stop until this is solved. It breaks my heart that someone so kind can be taken away--why you? I miss you dearly.

Joanne was an amazing nurse!Always Helping others. Full of Life and Laughter! She will be missed by so many.
