WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A scary situation today at Isaac Bear Early College High School and Wilmington Preparatory Academy. The two schools were put on lockdown after someone spotted a man with a gun nearby.

A student at Wilmington Prep reported seeing a black man about 5'6" wearing a black shirt and holding a gun. A school official says the student told the teacher what they saw. When the teacher went to investigate, the man took off. The school was immediately locked down. Across the street Isaac Bear Early College High School went on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

James Laria is a student at Isaac bear and UNCW. He says he's a little nervous about the situation.

"If there's people walking around with a gun, that's just not that fun," Laria said.

Many parents picked up their children early at Wilmington Prep. One parent who didn't want to talk on camera says she's furious that she heard the news of a man with a gun near her child's school from a friend before she heard it from the school. Other parents say the school reacted just fine.

"They let us know what was going on, and after they cleared it with the Sheriff's Department and we could get our kids, they called," said Ramon Ragin, as she picked up her grandson.

Students were outside for recess when they saw the man with the gun. Just before 1 p.m. Isaac Bear was taken off lockdown, but students were asked to remain indoors for safety.

UNCW police were stationed around the perimeter as a precautionary measure just in case the man made his way onto campus.

There's no word on the identity of the man who had that gun.
