OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- A man vacationing in Brunswick County drowned this morning. Ocean Isle Beach town officials say the victim is 27-year-old Carter Stroupe from the Greensboro area who was vacationing with his family here on Ocean Isle Beach.

It was just after 11:30 a.m. when Ocean Isle EMT's were called out to the beach near the Starboard Street public entrance after reports of a possible drowning.

"There was an ambulance, there were probably half a dozen firefighters and police officers," witness Lynn Smith said.

Beachgoers near where the incident happened were shaken up by the drowning.

"It was really surprising, like you didn't want to get back in the water," James Mooney said.

We ran into a man on the beach who gave the victim CPR. He did not want to go on-camera saying he didn't do it for the publicity but tried to save the man's life.

Town officials say they are unsure what led to drowning. This is the first drowning this summer at Ocean Isle Beach. A California man drowned earlier this month at Holden Beach while kayaking.
