Students at South Brunswick Middle School and High School had just one more stop before they were dropped off at school Thursday morning. But when their school bus stopped for a pick-up on Highway 211, the day started with a bang.
“It was a big boom and everybody just started yelling, ‘a car just hit us’,” described student Cody Cribb.
It happened around 7:30 Thursday morning in Saint James. About 25 students from South Brunswick Middle School and High School were riding the bus on their way to school they were hit by an SUV.
Bus driver, Maureen Moore said, “I was like 'oh my God', because that's the first thing anytime something happens to me, I think about the children.”
No one was seriously injured, but 10 students from the high school were taken to Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. The bumps and bruises ranged from headaches to sprained knees and wrists. Principal Vann Pennell met the injured students at the hospital.
“I am proud of the kids because in an incident like that, if they can respond the right way, it kind of keeps things under control and those kids responded to this in a tremendous way,” said Pennell.
Parents said they were happy with the way everyone involved handled the situation. “They had people waiting at the hospital to greet us, school administrators were here once we got here as well,” Michele Jackson said. “So they did a really good job, were very organized getting everybody in and getting them assessed.”
South Brunswick High School sent a bus to take students to school once they were discharged from the hospital, and despite the bumps and bruises, most of the students were eager to get to class.
According to highway patrol, the driver of the SUV was charged with failure to reduce speed.
As for the students, most went back to school Thursday and they will get back on the bus tomorrow morning to head to classes as usual.

Grammar
Can someone please explain why the editor does not make corrections as necessary:
Example:
Bus driver, Maureen Moore said, “I was like 'oh my God', because that's the first thing anytime something happens to me, I think about the children.”
Proper english would be:
Bus driver, Maureen Moore said, "I was like, 'Oh my God', because that's the first time something has happened to me. I'm thinking about the children."
It is so difficult to read when not correct.
Grammer
I am anxiously looking forward to the day when my life's so simple, that the only thing I have to do is sit around and use up energy to post a comment about proper grammer. As many problems as we have in this area at this time it would be refreshing to see that energy channeled on saying something about anything that counts towards making our world a better place.
They do not correct grammar because...
In journalism, when someone is quoted as saying, "lkjlakjwpojkw[pw". It has to be a verbatim statement between the quotation marks, not an interpretation of that statement to correct the grammar by the editor.
