Brunswick County residents who won't be home for the November 6 election are taking advantage of early voting. About 150 people have already cast their ballots. The new statewide one-stop registration system is also available, allowing people to register and vote at the same time. That's been up and running for two days. So far, just three people in Brunswick County have taken advantage of it. Bob Helfter was already registered. He voted early Friday, saying, "They need a verbal ID. I went back, I filled out all the stuff, I signed that that's who I was. I went back, they had the electronic voting machine, the lady was extremely polite, very thorough, showed me how to do it, there was nothing to it." The director of the Brunswick County Board of Elections, Greg Bellamy, wants to remind people to register where they permanently live, not where they may have a second home. The Cape Fear Gardener has been giving tips to our colleague Steve Rondinaro and his wife about how to improve their new home landscape. He wraps up his visit with some advice on a troubled tree and how to improve the home's curb appeal.
