Brunswick County schools make unexpected redistricting decision

READ MORE: Brunswick County schools make unexpected redistricting decision
School redistricting lines have been drawn in Brunswick County -but they were not the lines the public was expecting. No one ever said redistricting was easy. It's a necessary evil when you add not only an elementary school, but a brand new middle school to the equation. Tuesday night the Brunswick County School Board passed a redistricting plan. The plan they approved was a new one for both Town Creek Elementary and Cedar Grove Middle. "They just came off the press, nobody's had a chance to see them, but we're going to vote on them tonight," said county resident Tom Simmons. "I just think it's unfair to the public to bring out two redistricting maps for two schools and the people who will be affected the most haven't had a chance to see the final map and the parents are stuck with this." Brunswick County Transportation director Bobby Taylor said the new plan reflects what the public asked for in previous meetings. "This plan is their answer or their issues with all of the other plans. We took what they didn't like and made it into one good plan and that's what the board approved." Lincoln Elementary, in the north end of the county, was well-represented at the meeting. Representatives feel this new plan doesn't do a balanced job of attaining racial diversity. Lincoln Elementary teacher Rita Todd said, "In education there can't be any losers. We now have a more challenging job to do because of the scenario that was selected." The school board's decision on the redistricting plan was unanimous. Town Creek Elementary and Cedar Grove Middle schools are scheduled to open this fall.
