A domestic dispute in Supply turned deadly last night. A Brunswick County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a man, and the SBI is now investigating. Parents of the shooting victim question whether or not an argument between the couple should have led to the death of their son. Family members say Alton Lawrence Walters and his girlfriend had been in an argument for several days leading up to Sunday’s shooting. “She called me afraid, and we were coming back from Ocean Isle and she said I’m so afraid, he's come in, he's wrecked his moped right there and he was blood on his knee cap,” said the sister of Walters’ girlfriend. According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Bradley Hardee responded to the call at 2370 Captain’s Wheel Avenue in Supply. After he arrived, at around 7:30, neighbors and family say they heard a gun shot inside the house where Walters lived with his girlfriend. Walters’ girlfriend’s sister said, “I thought maybe they shot him where it wouldn't kill him or something, but I guess, I don't know what he did.” Lawrence Walters has a criminal record that includes a felony conviction from 2000 for indecent liberties with a minor. Despite several calls to law enforcement for past domestic disputes, and a restraining order, Walters' girlfriend had the order dropped so the two could live together. The shooting victim's father, Alton George Walters, lives only about a mile from the home where his son was shot. “Something had happened to Lawrence, with a phone call that was made by a neighbor down there, and she told us that we ought to go down there, because she believed Lawrence had been shot,” he said. Alton George Walters, went to the home, but Sheriff's Deputies would not let him see his son. “He was a good boy, he'd made a lot of mistakes drinking and having fun, and we'll miss him a lot.” Friends, family, and neighbors say 49-year-old Alton Lawrence Walters and his girlfriend had a contentious relationship dating back to 2000. The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office would not comment on any details surrounding the shooting or Deputy Hardee's status.

I just heard that Walters

I just heard that Walters tried to go for the deputy's gun. That is a #1 no no. Also a domestic dispute call is one of the most dangerous calls that law enforcement can be involved with. The girlfriend should have just walked away, kept the law out of it and he may still be alive today. I would bet that the deputy did nothing wrong. S/F ROGER FLEMING

Officer Bradley

Mu husband went to BLET with Officer Bradley. He is an outstanding officer with a cool head. He reacted to the situation the best he could. You can't wait for others to arrive if someone pulls a weapon on you, you have no choice but to react and he did. KUDOS to you Officer Bradley.

Not how we trained

Walters’ girlfriend’s sister said, “I thought maybe they shot him where it wouldn't kill him or something, but I guess, I don't know what he did.” No, if a LEO has to fire his weapon, it is shoot to eliminate the threat, not slow it down, not wound it but to stop the threat. You don't aim for the leg, arm or foot. You aim for center mass to drop it.

excessive force

With all the modern technology why did they have to shoot to kill? Why not shoot him in the leg or use a taser or a K-9 dog?

excessive force

Officer Hardee shot him with a taser TWICE! The guy was so 'high' it didnt affect him. There was NO choice!

We now know.

Well the officer did try to taser him first, but to no success. He pulled the prongs out and was still coming at the officer. Seems the officer had no other choice. My regards go out to the family who lost a loved one, and the officer who had to take a life in the line of duty.

you want him to wait ....

you want him to wait and run around in a circle while someone tries to take away his gun waiting for a dog? I know the officer did nothing wrong and is a great officer. He did what he had to do to protect himself and others.

We dont know the stiuation yet for this comment.

Quote: Guest28451 (With all the modern technology why did they have to shoot to kill? Why not shoot him in the leg or use a taser or a K-9 dog?) What a bad comment guest28451. We don't even know the situation yet and your making suggestions about something you surely don't seem to know much about. Officers are taught to shoot to incapacitate in a life treating situation with the use of deadly force. Shooting someone in the leg is not the best way to incapacitate a person. You do not shoot to mame. It isn't the movies, if your life is at risk you aim for the biggest target the mid section. Most K-9's are used for drug sniffing and do not specialize at attack, after all you wouldn't usually have a k9 at a domestic dispute. A domestic dispute is one the most dangerous situations for an officer. You are going into another mans castle, and you have no idea what your going to encounter, or how someone is going to react to a stranger in their home. With a taser you only have time for 1 shot so you better make it count, especially if your by yourself. If someone had a deadly weapon and intended to use it on you, do you want to defend yourself with a dog, a taser, or a firearm? Remember its your life. These officers are people, and they also have a family to go home to.

Sometimes, there is no

Sometimes, there is no choice but to shoot. If someone pulls out a gun, the officer isn't going to pull a taser. Even if someone pulls a small knife, in the close quarters of a home, the officer will go straight for the gun. He's not going to risk his life doing anything less. And most shootings happen so quickly, there isn't a lot of time to sit back and evaluate what response you're going to take, much less to pull out your radio and call for a K9. Are you kidding me with that suggestion? If there is a sudden threat, the officer must react instantly to remove the threat. Otherwise, you would be reading about a dead cop.

OFFICER BRADLEY HARDEE

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW SOME PEOPLE CAN SIT BACK AND CRITICIZE SOMETHING THEY KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT!!! WERE YOU ON THE SCENE WITH THIS OFFICER? DO YOU REALIZE WHAT THEY CONSTANTLY HAVE TO ENDURE? DOMESTIC DISPUTES ARE ONE OF THE MOST VOLITILE SITUATIONS THEY ENCOUNTER. THERE IS A REASON THAT THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE HAS NOT COMMENTED ON THIS SITUATION. DO YOU AS A PERSON GO OFF TELLING A STORY THAT YOU ONLY KNOW HALF OF??? THEY MUST GET ALL THE FACTS. AND AT THIS POINT IT IS NO LONGER IN THEIR HANDS, IT'S IN THE HANDS OF THE SBI. SOME ARE SO QUICK TO COMDEMN THIS OFFICER BUT I BELIEVE THAT A PERSONS CHARACTER SAYS ALOT ABOUT THEM. WHILE YOU ARE CONDEMNING THIS OFFICER, TAKE A LOOK ON NCDOC.ORG MR. ALTON L. WALTERS HAD A VERY EXTENSIVE CRIMINAL BACKGROUND. YOU CAN ALSO CHECK HIM OUT ON NC SEXUAL OFFENDERS REGISTRY. WHAT KIND OF PERSON WAS MR. WALTERS??? MAKES YOU THINK HUH??? PRAYING FOR OFFICER HARDEE AND HIS FAMILY!!!

You were the first person to

You were the first person to post on this story. No one had yet said anything about this deputy's actions, yet you are quick to jump on here and (All caps=yelling) are determined that everyone know the person killed had a criminal record. The fact remains that this deputy was only justified in using deadly force under certain circumstances. Since that information has not been released by a law enforcement agency, you have no more information than the rest of us do, and if we are to consider this officer's feelings and those of his family, I believe the dead man has a family as well and perhaps you could be more mindful of their feelings before you try and justify a man's death simply because of mistakes he has made in the past.

officer Bradley

MEDIC...You are so right about all of this. Only the ones who were on that scene knows exactly what happened, everyone else just need to quit passing judgement on Deputy Hardee. Who knows he may have just saved the lives of so many innocent people; had this man gotten behind the wheel of an automobile or gotten hold of a knife, firearm, anything else that he could've used as a weapon who knows how many others could have been in danger. And for those of you who thinks TASERS are the answer; in some cases the Taser doesn't even make a person flinch, maybe this was the case. Deputy Hardee did what he had to do in this volatile situation.

shooting

Bradley, you are in my prayers. I know you are going through a lot having to take someone's life. People, please don't think I'm callous, I'm not. My prayers go up for the Walters family also. Myself being a recovered alcoholic, I know first hand what alcohol will do to a family and anyone around the alcoholic himself. Forty years ago when I was 16 I was driving around drunk with a man and wrecked and killed him. He left behind a wife and 12 year old daughter. May God Bless all of you.
