Budget concerns for Pender school district

READ MORE: Budget concerns for Pender school district
cuts300.jpg
Our state's financial woes are having a trickle down effect on local school districts. Many districts are having to tighten their belts with a probable cut in state funding looming. School board members in Pender County are now looking at options if tough decisions have to be made. In Pender, 95 percent of the district's operating costs come from the state, so with the potential of a 3, 5, or even a 7 percent cut in funding, area schools would be out millions of dollars. There are several possible scenarios. The biggest blow would be to Pender Success Academy. Closing the alternative school could save the county $900,000. Under a 5 percent budget cutback, officials would also consider consolidating bus routes to alleviate transportation costs. Schools could see a reduction in their teaching assistant staff as well as teacher training. Central office staff could see pay cuts, and funding for textbooks could be reduced. The biggest loss could come from Pender Success Academy closing it's doors. If the school were to close, both students and staff would be absorbed back into traditional schools. All area school districts are anxiously awaiting the state legislature’s final budget decisions. They hope to hear from the senate within the next few days. The house will have to submit their proposals before final approval.

The money is there

The money is there. It is who is managing it that is the problem. I don't feel teachers training or teacher's ads should be cut in any way. If the case there should be more. I think those who want to take their kids to school they could ride the bus. make them pay a fee. That would put money in the system then you would see the drop in traffic. People would put the kids on the bus. Now I know before you start writting I know there are cases where the child is to small or the bus is two early etc.. or just not safe at the bus stop or problems on the bus. but, most can ride the bus. Start charging. I think with computers now text books can be on line. Think back when have you seen your child come with a text book, most of the time it on the computer, or a work book or work sheet. I want somebody to stop saying there is budget cut and get up here this is what we need to do fix it. Stop telling me there is a problem. Give me answers.

Where is the lottery money?

it always gets under my skin when they start talking about making cuts with the school system. What happen to the lottery money? The way I understood it was if NC got the "Education Lottery" the money would be put in to the school system. Why is the state still having to fund the schools? Maybe someone needs to do a report card on our Education Lottery and let us know why it is not making the grade when it comes to keeping our schools funded.

if you

read the paper or watched the news, you would have seen the pieces on her Majesty issuing an Executive Order and transferring the bulk of the Lottery funds to the General Fund in an effort to balance the budget. But she remains committed to Education.

You know what happen to the

You know what happen to the funding made possible by our lottery for our schools that our now Gov. Perdue pushed for, I wonder where all that funding is going because it sounds like to me its not going to our schools as promised.

By the time everyone takes

By the time everyone takes their cut, there isn't much left. If the schools recieved all the proceeds minus operating expenses from the lottery, we would have state of the art classrooms, and schools for that matter. Just like everything else, from the local level to the executive level, it is not what can I do for them, it's what can they do for me. It will NEVER change unless NEEDLESS spending stops.
