Some workers in monkey junction had an unexpected break from work today after police and fire departments forced them to evacuate their businesses to avoid a major gas leak.
A shopping plaza is being built behind the Taco Bell on Carolina Beach Road. Today, the construction came to a standstill, when gas from a construction main started spewing into the air.
Hudson construction is heading the project.
WWAY was told it was a worker for one of the utility companies who hit the main.
The gas was spraying into the air and with the wind blowing in all directions, police and fire departments decided to evacuate all surrounding businesses, including Taco Bell and the Post Office.
Nearly a dozen workers in the nearby buildings were displaced for about two hours this afternoon.
No one was injured.
As of three-o-clock this afternoon, the Myrtle Grove Fire Department confirmed that the leak had been plugged. They were working on getting all the displaced employees back into their businesses safely.
