Busy times for ocean rescuers

This weekend was the busiest all season for ocean rescue crews in our area. Sunday was the third consecutive day of red flag swimming conditions. Ocean rescue crews in Wrightsville Beach answered twenty seven rescue calls yesterday. Two people nearly drowned. Carolina Beach rescue crews say they answered more than sixty calls this weekend. Dave Baker of the Wrightsville Beach ocean rescue team says everyone should be extra careful. “Unless you're an experienced ocean swimmer and/or surfer, you should not venture in to the water,” Baker said. “Doing so and going beyond your limitations could result in loss of life and/or serious injury.” Baker says the swell from Hurricane Bertha causes severe rip currents, which make for dangerous swimming conditions.
