Improvement plans for the state's first urban scenic byway has won an award from the state's chapter of landscape architects. The scenic byway is made up of Water, 3rd, and South 5th streets, and Lake Shore Drive. The improvement plan strives to preserve the history and celebrate the attractions of the area, while making it easier to travel through it. Assoc. Transportation Planner Joshuah Mello said, "So we're looking at increasing the pedestrian safety, beautifying the entire corridor making it a real statewide as well as national attraction." The transportation planning group has applied for a $900,000 grant to use to improve South 3rd Street. The group said the entire improvement plan is a multi-million dollar project and will take more than 20 years to complete.
