Traffic moving again on Cape Fear Memorial Bridge

Traffic is moving westbound again on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge after about a 30-minute delay.

For the second time in less than a week, traffic was backed up because of a problem on the bridge. A bridge tender said westbound traffic out of Wilmington was stopped since the bridge lowered after an opening around 1 p.m. The problem was a barrier that is stuck in the down position.

Friday afternoon traffic was blocked in both directions after the bridge would not close back into place properly after it opened. That delay was felt by drivers throughout the evening commute.

skyway bridge

It makes no sense, in my opinion, to build a "new" bridge until I-140 is finished and the Memorial Bridge is overhauled and updated to insure that it is safe and operational. If the state doesn't have the money to complete what it has already started and repair what has already be built, where is the logic in starting another project that will take a HUGE amount of money and obligate the state to spend monies that it doesn't have
for the next 40 years.
Also, it might not be the "cure all" that many who have posted here previously think that it will be.

Look Again!

The State has recently spent millions on the control and operation systems of the Memorial Bridge and it's still malfunctioning. The state has also deemed this bridge TROUBLED, OUT DATED and OVER CAPACITY! These problems can not be repaired. The I-140 completion is many years off, but even if completed today, it would do little to alleviate the conjestion from our daily east-west metro traffic and traffic from the State Port. The work soon to be done on the bridge is mainly a paint job. To slow down further corrosion and hopefully improve the appearance.

We needed a convention center more...NOT!

Who says we don't need the new Skyway Bridge?

How much longer can we allow this unsafe worn-out bridge to be our metro area's main connector? How much longer can it handle most of the heavy trucking traffic to and from the state port? Michael Lee, candidate for NC Senate, says we don't need the new bridge. I disagree!

Wow, another problem with the bridge. Some people think the answer would to be build another bridge right next to the current one. They seem to miss the fact that that the other problem is where 421, 74 & 76 merge in that bottle neck. Either build the Skyway or finish the I-140.

We need both...and more

We need I-140 finished into Brunswick County, we need the Skyway Bridge, and we need a high-rise into Wrightsville Beach.

Oh, but wait - we have no money because the state has to support a couple of million deadbeats.

Yes, we'll be seeing more of this: The government failing to do one of it's most basic jobs because it is blowing the money on something that was never intended to be a role for government.
