SHALLOTTE -- Shallotte is the first local town we are showcasing in our series, "Cape Fear Pride." The Brunswick County town has a population of roughly 1,800 people. Lifelong Shallotte resident Bobby Williamson is the eighth generation of his family to live there. He said, "For most of its history it was pretty much flying under the radar screen. It was out of sight, out of mind." Williamson owns Bobby's Auto Parts on Main Street. He's no stranger to the building, which is one of the oldest in Shallotte. His father ran a hardware store out of it for 20 years before Williamson took over. "Back in the day, so to speak, everybody knew everybody. No one locked their house, no one locked their car," Williamson said. He said the town has come a long way since then. Mayor Gerald Long couldn't agree more. The mayor of six years moved to Shallotte in 1970 and opened the first 24-hour supermarket Shallotte ever saw. Mayor Long said, "Shallotte is still small enough to have small town appeal, friendly people, but it also has a good business district and we are fairly self-sufficient." Bobby Williamson says some of his favorite childhood memories revolve around the Shallotte River. He said, "Boating and fishing and swimming, and dreaming of being pirates." Williamson has seen both positive and negative changes to his town, but at the end of the day, Shallotte is home.
